Monthly Photo Assignment Avatar

Thought this might be a fun exercise. It's not a contest, just something people may want to try.

This month's assignment: Motion. I won't go further than that. Just take out your camera and capture "Motion." Be creative!

The only rule: You can't use anything that has been published in your gallery already.

Next month, I'll post the next assignment. Are you game?

Here's my attempt:

Motion by Team member, GFXartist sponsor emarts

Basil, I really like your shot. I especially like the distortion in the feet. Gives it a feeling like the child is jumping through time.

Team member, GFXartist sponsor Xris, That's an excellent abstract. Looks like water. Is it?

Elite kittyKat, how long was that exposure? Or was the lamp moving really fast. It looks like an orb! Dig the colors too.

Thanks, guys for your participation.

Yup Samson, it is indeed water. It's a night shot of a couple of my coi fish under a small water-display. Can't remember the photo-metrics i'm afraid. Straight shot with no effects or post processing, other than the crop.

This thread's a cool idea btw. I'm just surprised that there's not more ppl interested.

Thanks to all who participated. Wasn't that fun? Here's the next one.

February's Photo Assignment: Pet Photography!
Now before you go off screaming to the hills that this site has enough mundane snapshots of pets, let me explain the rules to this assignment. You need to treat this assignment as if you were hired to shoot a PORTRAIT of someone's beloved animal. No snapshots! Also, we're talking about domestic animals. No zoo shots.

Refer to Kirk's Photographer's Handbook for some guidelines to taking good photos. Here's a couple of hints to taking decent pet photos: show the animal doing something. And get down on their level. Focus on the eyes, not the snout!

I think this is a good assignment since there has been comments about the number of mediocre pet snaps on this site. It seems a little education is needed. Please be involved. Post a photo and comment on others who have posted.

Oh, and if you already posted an animal shot in your gallery and would like it critiqued, you may do so.

ciab, Nice close up of the cat. However, there's an odd distortion in it? It looks a bit squished at the bottom. Did you shoot a reflection of the cat? I like the idea that you filled the frame with the cat's face. It's good that you focussed on the eyes, but in this case, I think you should also have the whole face in focus. You could do that by stepping back so your camera has an easier time focussing. And then crop the image the same way.

Here's an example of one that I took awhile ago that is similar to yours: http://emarts.gfxartist.com/artworks/70389. I tried to keep as much of the face in focus as possible, but I think the eyes still look a little soft. One thing that I did that adds a bit more interest is moving the three dark patches (eyes and nose) off-center.

I'm sorry I don't have a professional studio... and max only wanted to hang out for 2 shots she doesn't like having her photo taken :|

she has always had one floppy ear and she was looking up cause she was listening to lee ann in the other room..
so I hurried and took my shot then she got up and licked me :|
I wish I could get a pro shot of her she has cancer...I don't know how much longer she has

Very nice  koks. Like how everything else is still sharp. I think the composition could use a little work though.

Pam, the perspective is awesome. The focus is not good though and the background very distracting. However, I can see you vectorizing this for a really nice portrait of you dog.

terencever | 02/21/2006 @559 | Editedit post
agree! regarding the background... i noticed that all the colors blended well except for that colorful blanket thingy covering the table ... so minus that.. focusing on the dog make..off focus on the backround... and some adjustments to the levels... what you think? :)
