Android - Crazyboy Wip- Avatar
JordanRoots | 01/14/2007 @192 | Edit edit post
This is a projet I'm working on right now. I started today. I used myself as reference. I couldn't find any ref on the internet making that pose so I took a picture of me doing it, it was very painful shooting the picture with a webcam.
Here's the concept: it's in the year 2150, that man had had an accident and his body was very very badly injured, but thanks to technology, he could survive but now has an endroid body. The only part of his body that survived the accident was his head and only his left eye stayed intact. Now, everynight, he does not go to bed, he has to plug himself in a plug and wait till his batteries are fully recharged to wake up.
Now, he's recharging.
hopefully, this painting will be fininshed by the end of the week for The contest. I didn't want to make a Wip at first, but now I'm kinda stuck and need some help.

ref: (my hair looks so greasy on that picture!)

here are some progress.

I need ideas for the background, help for the metal color and highlights. And If you see anatomy issues, please point them out"!!

**WHy in the threads, the max width size is 600px?? why isn't it 716px like it should be?***

Now, I have a dilemma : I can't choose between the 2 versions, the one with lightgray background and the one with dark blue bg. I did it blue because It's occuring during the night, but I really like the gray one.
Please help me choose.

hey hey, really cool! the only thing that disturbs me is the upper line, that devides your head in 2.
it seems to devide unevenly, i'd bend it more to the right. apart from that it really looks good : D

Choose the blue version

Wow, I wonder how the hell you drew those fine lines with thw mouse *clap my hands* !!!
Yup, the blue version will give your pic more life as it has colours. I pick it, too.

Misticcat: It's not that hard making those lines with a mouse, I use the pen tool in photoshop. It makes curved lines by just dragging points on the picture. I couldn't use this tool at first (I did not understand it) but now I learned to use it and it's awesome. Thank you!

Patrick: Yeah, I agree, the upperline needs reworking. I made it three times but I can't devide the skull evenly. I'll have to try again. Thanks for you advice!

I'm still not sure about the background, I have two votes now for the blue one. I'll wait a little bit more to work on it.

I added a texture on the helmet, and some blue glow on his face.

I need feedback

I added a photo in the background, a photo of him and his wife before the accident, his wife was killed in the accident.
I don't know, I think the piture clashes with the rest of the painting....

Enjoy this concept your going for with a backround story as to why he has become a android. Colors for backround both have their strong and weak points; grey has a sterile mood as it blends with tones used on his metal parts, while the blue version creates a meloncholy mood to the scene. Although those are intial thoughts it is similar thoughts that a viewer may have on any piece, so choose the one that best fits your idea behind this piece. Picture on wall could work, just not in the way in which it is currently being presented though. Instead of it being a basic photo on a wall; perhaps it could be on a computer screen, which would fit the future setting this scene is taking place. Keep it up.

thank you Brian! About the photo, you're right, it doesn't work presented like that. I'll have to find a way to integrate the photo with the scene. You have a good idea about the computer. The man is recharging it's betteries, I'll paint wires that go from it's head to a computer. but, I'm not sure if this is gonna work....

If anyone has an idea as to how to integrate the photo witht the painting, please tell me.

I made a body. I decided not to put the photo in the painting. I think it's better like that.
I'm not sure about the cropping...

Nice work Jordan! The shading on the face looks too airbrushy though, so it gives a plastic feel more than a metallic one.
The anatomy is very good! Some more space on the top and the left would be nice IMO :)
Great start!

Thank you Diane. So, Should I add a metal texture to the face like I did for the "hat" ? I was wondering if I should or keep it smooth.
I'll rework the cropping too. I might add something on the left, or let it blank, I dunno yet.

I think that it would be a nice idea ;) You could also contrast it a little bit more and add some sharp highlights :)

Thanks for your answer and your comment (as well as the tutorial link) in my latest work :). Here I come to see the next process of your WIP. I really agree on removing the photo, which may not only give you more unnecessarily hard jobs to do but also make the scene irrelevant IMO. The process on the body currently looks okay. But I can't give anymore major comments until you make more process. The hand put on the chest that you've sketched don't look right. But of course I can't confirm until you do more.

Misticcat: :), the hand is not done yet, I'll have to take a picture of my hand doing that gesture and I'm not there yet. I needa digital camera, really, coz now all I have is my web cam and it's crap. Thanks for viewing my wip and commenting! I appreciate it a lot! I hope I'll be able to work on it tonight. :)

Is the lens on his forehead too much?
I'll work on the hand some other time.
I still got no idea for the background.. For now, it's a wall, but it could be something else.. **smacks his head with force*

It starts looking much better! don't be afraid of adding very sharp higlights, metallic surfaces always have very sharp contrasted areas.
Will you remove the thin red outline on the shoulder?

Nice Jordan! There's only one thing I would like to say. He looks too young to be married. Sorry, I had to say it, although the concept is great! Nice work, I can't wait to see the final result. See ya!

Diane: I'll have to study how metal reacts to light. Cause now I have no Idea. Yes, I will remove the red outline on the shoulder. it happened when I used the liquify tool and forgot that my layer was locked, my background color was red so everything that moved became red... Thank you

Diego: I agree, he looks too young. perhaps it's because I was the reference? lol, but I don't know how to make him look older ; I can't really make him a beard, he's a robot... If you have any clue how to make him look older, please tell me. Thanks for your comment!

I tried to make him look older. I made the lens smaller too. added some glow.
I wonder if I should show more of his skin? like for the left eye, maybe show some other part of his body?

Re: Android - Crazyboy Wip- Avatar
mysticcat | 01/16/2007 @181 | Editedit post
This is just my personal opinion : If you want to show more of his skin, do it on the face only (half of his face, for example), cuz it's the place where viewers can see and feel the emotion of your character. Besides, I have another idea which may strongly influence your process : It seems that you're applyingt the normal human anatomy on your android, right ? At this time I still feel that he's a normal human being who's wearing a grey suit rather than an android. Of course I can't be sure of that until I see you do more, since it can be easily fixed by adding more wires or mechanic details on his body in your next steps. The body anatomy is okay, but I suggest you should make it look harder and sharper to create mechanic feeling (do you often use Blur filter in smoothing ?).

That's just my idea. Looking forward to see your next process. I can't think of a good background for you yet either :).

Nice work since last time. Cropping seems rather tight around him, which may your background since there isn't much left or right of where he is positioned. Wire idea is good, but having go directly up and out of frame does so with viewer because there of the strong contrast between it and dark wall. Recharging is good concept, perhaps he is outside with his back against a building and just off to viewers left could be a cityscape. Inside of a recharging unit, which could have lights showing how full batteries thus far and wires lead into varying parts of his body.

Re: Android - Crazyboy Wip- Avatar
JordanRoots | 01/16/2007 @941 | Editedit post
Mysticcat: I think I'll let only the eye uncovered, coz I'm quite satisfied with the face and I'm not sure if the result would still look good with some more skin. But your right saying it should be in the face, coz on the body.. it would really work.
The fact that he looks like a human being wearing a gray suit is more because the people who made him wanted him to look normal. (according to the concept). But I don't want it to look like he's wearing a gray suit, I'll follow your advice of making it more sharp and look more metal. I don't use blur filter but I use the Smudge tool. Since I use a mouse, I have no choice but to use that tool. I hope I'll be able to afford a tablet soon. Thank you! I'm glad you follow my WIP, I'm looking forward to see your next (very Helpful BTW) comment.

Brian: Do you think I should make a wide crop to give more space to the background? coz it's cropped like that because I don't really have a "real" background yet. But your ideas inspired me. Thank you. I think I'll try if I can do a cityscape, or maybe try somthing else. Thank you!
