AC Ryan CONTEST : DATA GENERATION Avatar
ACRyan | 02/17/2007 @061 | Edit edit post
THE CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED

Let me introduce Myself. My name is Ken and I work for a company named AC Ryan. AC Ryan is the company that provides the prizes. Jordan (Forum moderator JordanRoots) and I are organizing this contest together. Should you have any question, just ask one of us, or post you question here and we will answer.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Theme :
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Data Generation. This is a tricky and very easy theme at the same time. We'd like to see your artwork interpretation and expression of this theme. But you might wonder: What does Data Generation mean. Here’s a little explanation:
In AC Ryan's vision of things, the Data Generation is the "3rd generation" of computer users - after the "1st generation" the Hardware Generation (think IBM PC, Apple II where the focus was creating hardware). The the "2nd generation" the Software Generation (think DOS, Windows, Lotus 123 where the focus was inventing software to use the hardware).
In this Data Generation, the focus is on data. Audio data, photo data, video data, spreadsheets, stock market data etc or some may call it "Content". So we live in a world full of data. That's the theme. A very broad theme.
You can also interprete data generation as generating data (as in creating data). We also live in a world where we seem to generate a lot of data for good or bad - sms, chat, spam, nonsense video, clicking away on our phone-camera, blogging, leeching, creating mp3s, compressing videos... it's all generating data.

Rules and further info
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Submission format must be 2560x1600 desktop wallpaper

  • When your submission is done, you have to post a lower-res 716x418 version (GFXartist max. width 716) in this contest thread and then PM Jordan (Forum moderator JordanRoots.
  • Don't forget to add the full resolution 2560x1600 version in the additional downloads, it's this version that will be judged.
  • Max 3 entries per person
  • Judges: Jordan Forum moderator JordanRoots, Émilie  EmyRoots, Ken (that's me)  ACRyan and my 2 colleagues from AC Ryan, Alex and Dave.
  • You MUST add a link to this contest in your artwork's description.
  • If you want to be nice, spread the word about this contest. :)
All submitted artwork will be exhibited in a Data Generation Gallery on ACRyan.com website. Other than that, standard rights apply according GFXartist rules, as mentioned here http://www.gfxartist.com/about/FAQ/10144/

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prize(s)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There will be one or more winners, according to how many submissions we receive. The 1st prize is guaranteed (even if there is only one submission)

  • The 1st prize: 1TB (1024GB) external harddisk built with our AC Ryan AluBoxDuo external harddisk casing. It's worth more than $600.
Let's see if I can explain what this prize is, it's an external disk space with more than enough space to store about 2 million images, or 300,000 MP3s, or 1000 DVD-quality movies. It's 2x 500GB harddisk in the AluBoxDuo. You can have them running as 2 seperate drives or configure them to be combined as one 1TB (1024GB) drive.

  • There's also a 2nd & 3rd prize, each will receive an AC Ryan MobiliT Universal Notebook Power Adaptor. I personally find it very convenient to have extra notebook power adaptors : one in the office, one at home, one at my friend's place so I dont have to carry an adaptor around with me. Also if a friend comes over and forgot to bring his power adaptor, he can always use this cos it's universal for all notebooks.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll probably enter in this one. I was thinking of doing a photo shoot of something that I might be able to edit to match this instead.

you said: 2560x1600 desktop wallpaper
just so you know we can post no wider than 716px in our gallery..
so I guess you should say on your post... we post an extra link to those extra sizes 2560x1600 desktop wallpaper
btw... whats the rules on the images.. if you enter the contest
the images we post we have rights too correct?
what about the winner... what do you do with the winning images? also why the sizes 2560x1600 thats very large.. many of use dont like posting that size because of art theft
also about the theme ... im some what of a geek but im not clear on what you really want for art work..
maybe some sort of example?

JordanRoots | 02/18/2007 @786 | Editedit post
kitty: If I understood your question well, I'd say you can edit your image as many times as you want, as long as the deadline is not reached, even if your entry is submitted.
For the wallpaper size, we're still discussing it.
For the rights, adding a sig or (if you really fear being stolen) a matermark would surely prevent people stealing the artwork. But, the artworks will, by no means, be used to promote anything or used commercially.

hey kitty, as jordan said, entries will not be used for commercial purposes. we'll be exhibiting the artwork on the Data Generation Gallery on our site. i've added a rights paragraph in the contest text referring to GFXartist guideline on rights. anyway, all artwork belongs to the artist - we respect that. what we would like to do is to be involved with the art community and stimulate artwork esp. digital art / photography. if indeed we see artwork that we'd love to use for commercial purposes, we'll certainly contact the artist / commission the artist, that would be separate from the contest. the contest is meant to stimulate art :)

regarding size and posting, i've edited the contest text to fit the max. 716px.

why 2560x1600? widescreen is hitting the digital display scene like wildfire. Notebooks, LCD monitors, LCDTVs - widescreen widescreen widescreen. there isnt much widescreen art around so we thought we'd encourage it. Also, we'll be judging the submissions on 32" widescreen 2560x1600 LCD display. The details and size it offers does make good digital artwork come alive, and appreciated much better than at 1024x768. So it's actually a good thing for digital art community. We've seen it and believe it.

about the theme - it's free for interpretation. examples : art that expresses how internet / computers / digital devices has become a basic part of life, as common as a pencil... abstract representation of data... photograph of a blogger... drawings of new forms of digital life... interprete FREELY. I can elaborate more on the concept behind the theme. If that still sounds vague, I try not to get too specific and so as not to influence your individual interpretation and expression of the theme.

What artwork do we want? ...anything goes.

Actually, in short... just create and have fun ;)

Hey, i havent got a picture that meets those size requirements, but I ahve made this: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/39875815/ I know it's not the right resoluion, but the guy who started this (ACRyan) contacted me on Deviantart and said that it would be suitable.

I may also enter somthing later. Thanx for ur time.

Re: AC Ryan CONTEST : DATA GENERATION Avatar
ACRyan | 02/20/2007 @613 | Editedit post
Hey Konton-Kyoudai, nice to see you. yup the theme of your artwork is very suitable for the Data Generation cotest... to enter the contest, you do need to have it in 2560x1600 format, and you'll need to post a smaller version in the GFXArtist (716x418 cos GFX has a 716px max width) and then add the 2560x1600 version as additional download. dont forget to read the "Rules and futher info" in the Contest text above.

I'm sure it aint too much trouble to do a 2560x1600 version of it isnt it? ;)

Question for Mods/Admins:

If a piece is composed of photos, 3D, and 2D (whether digital or traditional), is that uploaded to the Design or Photomanip category?
Or, are all entries in this contest uploaded to the Design category?

Danke in advance for your reply.

Re: AC Ryan CONTEST : DATA GENERATION Avatar
Martin | 02/20/2007 @724 | Editedit post
It depends largely on the nature of the final piece. I'd say Photo Manipulation if the photographic material is quite prominent. If it's definitely not, then Design will probably be a better fit.

Yeah...kitty has a good point there... making our "bigger" versions online and available to anyone is pretty much the same than screaming out loud : "Hey...go ahead, steal my work !". You guys should try to find a way for us to send those pieces to you without making them available for anyone...

JordanRoots | 02/21/2007 @930 | Editedit post
I'm glad you're in pam :)

I hadn't thought about that issue... The thing is, you have to pm me to submit you entry, and ken needs the big version to judge. So, if you must, you can pm me for the entry, and then pm Ken to give him the full sized version.
Or, one thing you could do that I wouldn't mind (don't know if ken will mind though) would be to post the big version in additonal downloads with a watermark on it. but please, if you use watermarks, make it so we can clearly see the whole artwork, so that it's almost unnoticiable.

Another thing, I don't know if it's written on the contest's first page but, all the entries will be displayed on ACRyan's site with all your names and necessary links to your gallery or blog. He did it for the last contest and it was okay, but the problem is that the images on ACRyan's site are in full size res and some artists don't want to get stolen. I'd say that you have the choice wheter or not you want it displayed in full size on ACryan's site, but it's still mendatory that you submit a 2560*1600px artwork to us for the judging.

What do you think Ken?

hey pam. sent u a reply. :)

what Jordan said sounds pretty reasonable. i guess some artist dont mind sharing their art while some prefer to protect them. imo, both ways are perfectly fine.

let's do it this way...
  • up the 716px version on GFX and pm Jordan
  • pm me (ACRyan) to give me the full size 2560x1600 version
  • if you do not want it displayed full size on ACRyan site, let me know - we'll respect your wishes
