How to do! - Waterdrop-shots. Avatar

Sure there are many ways to do it. I was asked a few times how I did my waterdrop-shots, so I decided to make a short tutorial. So this is the process I did (many times) to get a few, more or less felicitous shots.

First of all the setup:
What you'll need is: one plastic bottle, a piece of cord, a knife, and a corkscrew (or a nail).

First cut the bottom of the bottle off, and tear a small hole in the cap. Then: take a small piece of the cord and put it into the hole (the lenght of this piece is deciding for the frequence of the waterdrops - you can experiment with the lenght)

So that was the handicraftpart, now you have to hang it up, by fixing the cord on the bottle :) . As a bowl of water I always used a white marmoreal plate (only about 3-5mm height). Fill the plate (or bowl) with water and put it right below the hang-up bottle. (hint: towels can be VERY useful! so keep them within reach ;) )

Now fill the bottle with water and wait till the bottle has stopped to oscillate. then take any small object (I used a small battery) and put it on the spot where the drops impinge. So you can focus excactly on this spot (used manual focus). after you've focused, remove the object again, and start taking pictures :)

I'd recommend to everybody to use a flash, an open shutter, and an exposure time of not longer than 1/200sec. You could either use a series-function (if your cam has one, and hope you were lucky [that's how I took the first one]) or you can "observe" the end of the cord and pull the trigger when the drop leaves the cord (which gives mostly the best results).

The results (could) look like these:

Into another world II by Elite Lenn0
The Collision by Elite Lenn0
The Crown by Elite Lenn0

I hope this is helpful. have fun with experimenting with drops :) !
