"The Fourth Peak" - realism? Avatar

I'm working on a commissioned piece and I really want it to look more realistic... any thoughts?

Sorry about the bad picture - I'm slightly in a rush and couldn't find my camera... :-/

is this a real life painting?

Yes, it's a real life painting - acrylic on canvas...probably should've included that the first time around...

I have a realistic looking picture in my head, but I don't know what to do to get there. Obviously some shadowing and such will be needed, but, again, not sure what techniques to use in order to get the desired effect...

One thing that may help early on.
Saturation and focus is often effected by distance. To help create the illusion of depth you could "blue out/ white out/fade out" the most distant mountain or mountains and leave the ones in the foreground crisp and much more heavily saturated.

I actually had thought of that, but I wasn't sure if it would be a good idea, as I'm prone to going back and fixing things... I thought it would be better if I finished up the details and then went over the mountains in a general whitewash...?

i would recommend not working from your head on this painting, unless you actually want it to look unrealistic.

use a reference, or use the information in the reference (shapes, shadows, textures, colours, etc.) to shape the painting as you see fit

good work, great improvement from the first image. try to add details in the foreground to give it a bit more depth. also if you look at pics of for example mount everest, you'll see that mountains are rarely that smooth, add some rocky stuff on them, they'll look more realistic
