FrozenCPU.com $500 Banner Contest! - Enter for a chance at $500! Avatar
GlitterKill | 07/06/2007 @646 | Edit edit post
FrozenCPU.com is itching for a new banner to represent their store and they have decided to sponsor an OUTSTANDING giveaway in order to get it! Here is what they are looking for, and I quote:

"I am willing to give a 500 dollar gift card to FrozenCPU for the following.

- New Flash Based Top Banner (728x90) that "outshines" the current one........

- Run the contest. 4 week contest.

- I will decide the winner.

- The banner needs to be OFF THE CHAIN."

So that is what you are aiming for... a SLICK flash-based banner that is sure to attract attention and represents what FrozenCPU has to offer. The banner should be 728px wide by 90px tall.

You can get submission info here: http://forums.pcapex.com/pcapex_news/109909-frozencpu_com_500_banner_contest.html

I look forward to seeing your entries!

If I were to win it, how would I be able to use the certificate? I don't live in your country, there's no way I'll be able to show the certificate and buy something. except if I can order via internet? and give the certificate via internet too?

coz I'd be interested in joining, if, of course, this is not a fake contest like the others....

DEFINITELY not a fake... I run PCApex.com for a living. I will ask the sponsor about being out of the country. If they are cool with that then, yes, they issue the gift certificate electronically for you to use at checkout. :)

Even if it is not fake, it is still speculative work. Basically you are invited to put in real labor into maybe dollars. In this case you can't even spend these dollars you maybe get on what you want, due to the payment in certificate.

Keep away. Serious clients have budgets, they do not lure newbies into "you do work to my specifications, and I might pay you if I like it" scams.

A scam? That is a pretty unjust slander isn't it? You know nothing of my own reputation. Feel free to poke around our site or ask anyone about my character. I don't "scam" anyone! I have seen your sort of attitude before. Odds are you have taken part in a contest like this before and lost, so your feelings are hurt. I am sorry for that if it is the case. But this sort of work IS a great way to get your foot in the door with a prospective client. I have received quite a few paying gigs after taking part in a contest. So it can indeed, lead to getting paid, and (even more importantly) it will add to your portfolio at the very least. Designers to ALL SORTS of experimental work to hone their skills and styles. Why not perform some of that practice while taking part in a contest?

Simply put, your attitude is way too elitist for my taste. Art is more than just a commodity. If that is all you see it as then your world must be a pretty sad place. That being said, you are more than entitled to your OPINION, since that is all it really is...

That silly NO SPEC site has a section where I am supposed to be able to leave comments on my opinion about the subject yet that section does not work. Why does that not surprise me? That topic could be argued ad nauseum... it boils down to opinion. :)

A question: Why not approach an established Flash designer with $500 and ask them to produce a banner. You would get a shit-hot one for that amount of money. All you're going to get with this approach is a large number of inferior designs. I don't get it.

That is not true. Sure, going straight to a designer would be a guaranteed result. I get that, I really do. But there is more reason than to just get the banner. Doing it this way is a marketing tactic by itself, is it not? It is also a way a sponsor can work toward something useful why also hooking up the contest host (us) with a little extra traffic. :) Plus, who is to say that some of the designers are not very talented and would make a banner that would really please the sponsor? We have had other design contests in the past and the results were very impressive... sponsored by the same sponsor. That is enough proof that the client was happy with the results since they are running another contest and went bigger this time. :)

Like I said before, it's all about opinion. Pretty much any negative point you bring up about contest design work can be countered with a positive one. I have participated in quite a few design contests in the past and have NEVER regretted it. :)

I've decided to write an in-depth article debunking much of the NO-SPEC propaganda. There is obviously noone trying to educate people about the counterpoints of that NO-SPEC site. I will be taking their points bit by bit and giving a positive outlook. Why? Not every situation is the same. "Spec" work can be very beneficial for the designer and the client when done properly and by the right companies. Many companies thrive through communities... PC modders are a prime example since we are not a very large group comparatively.

I'll be sure to post a link to the article when it is live. :)

Counter the fact that if you have 100 entrants, 99 are going to gain no benefit whatsoever other than having to deal with a rejection email. If an artist wants to do a portfolio piece they can do one. They don't need a contest. What are they going to put in their portfolio? "Here's a piece I submitted to a forum for their logo. It was rejected. I received nothing." Hardly conducive to future business.

I don't have a problem with you running a competition, offering a prize (although $500 would be better than a $500 voucher). That's fine. What isn't fine is misleading people that participating itself provides any benefit to the artist. Let's be clear, it does not. All it does is lead the artist into bad habits and damage their credibility in business.

So to set the record straight. There is one prize at stake. That's a $500 voucher. There is nothing else. There are no other benefits to taking part. If people wish to participate, that's great. I won't advise them not to. But everyone should be aware of the terms, which are what I've just stated.

firstly I'd like to vouch for GlitterKill. He DOES run the pcapex.com site and for many years - in fact it's one of the better known and reputable sites for the special hardware / casmodding / gaming community. I'd like to think GK knows a thing or two about community. My colleague had a chance to work with him a few years back when we ran a contest on his site. It was real good fun :)

I do agree that there are indeed companies (mostly one-man homeshops or so) who are using contests as a disguise to get cheap work. That's bad. And sad. I'm afraid I'd have to bet that Frozen-cpu.com (the sponsor of this contes) does not fall into this bunch. They consistently introduce new banners and have got enough banners made by Pro's and their in-house graphics ppl. There's no need for them to disguise a contest to get a banner.

If I'm not wrong, the contest (sponsored by Frozen-cpu.com) is running on PCApex.com - to computer hardware users, making a banner is a great challenge, real good fun. I'm sure GlitterKill has all good intentions in promoting the contest here and inviting ppl here to join in the contest. Sounds harmless and fun.

About Contest good or evil. Put aside the fake and "bad intention" contests, I'd have to say Contests are good for the community. I for one would / intend to see more Contests running here. You gotta see it from a community point of view. It's a good way to have fun, a good way enjoy the positve competitive spirit, great for "discovering talents" (think talent shows). I can also see why some artists would not want to waste their time on a contest. And I can also see why some artists would love the thrill, joy and focus of entering a contest. Some ppl do paint and create art for joy.

I could go on, but let me pause here heheh. Well, chill out and enjoy :)
