The first one has a good solid feel to it.
The second one seems incomplete and somewhat forced. The creature's head is too flat in color and value, especially the gaping solid black mouth.

Nice backgrounds in both of them, tho'!

I agree with Madster on the second one's feeling of incompleteness. The first one looks a lot better in that aspect.
