The big 'free/affordable host accounts that support linking' thread Avatar
Martin | 03/07/2003 @513 | Edit edit post
We are fully aware that we make it quite difficult for some members to showcase artwork since we don't host the full works locally. On the other hand this system has been able to put together a gallery with an overall high quality due to the fact that it just takes quite some energy to add and artwork. Therefore we're pretty happy with the whole thing and do not intend to change it any time soon.

However, there are still a lot of people out there in the need of webspace where they can link from. I say we use our brains collectively to put together a nice list of free and affordable host accounts that allow image linking.

Here are two hosts I have in my list

Affordable:
http://www.gfxartist.com/about/donate (yes for a little $ we will host your work)
http://www.creationstorm.com/ (the hosting comp. of GFXartist, 250mb webspace for 5.95 USD, leech support)
http://www.hostmatix.com/ (not sure if they support linking)
http://www.port5.com/

If you know any similar hosts please throw them in a reply. If you have a webserver yourself and you think you can spare some space... adopt a member! Please start a new thread for that stuff.

sic6six: it could be that due to the large amount of gfxmembers that moved that way, they too have gone antileech (no remote linking).

_EDIT_
It seems http://mywebpage.netscape.com/ no longer has leech support and it not a good place to put your art.

To expand on the Lycos deal, you get 100mb of space with FTP, MySQL, Php and as far as I know, unlimited bandwidth. For some reason I use the French version though; http://www.multimania.lycos.fr/ It's a good site that I've been using for almost two years and haven't had any problems with, apart from maintenance downtime.

I use 24-7 Webs™ International and I have not had any problems. The basic package runs at about $3.83 per month.
50 mb storage, 1000 mb data transfer, 2 sub-domains, 5 POP3 email, Host 1 domain
http://www.24-7webs.com/web_hosting_plans.htm

Little FYI: There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. If you check the fine print it is "unlimited" until you take up a certain percentage of the server bandwidth and then you are cut off, usually until the end of the month.

maybe you could offer a way for members to post their full view artworks here too? instead (since I don't have any current webspace unless I am online [cable connection but puter doesn't stay on all the time]) I link my full view option to the page it is on through dA. (not the 640 direct hotlink, but the "full view" link)

Why do you use the French version and not the English?

AWESOME host, 100% free, you can upload many image formats as long as the file isnt over 250 kb (otherwise they compress it) and you get 100 megs of space (yes 100 megs of free space) and they support leeching, all you do is log in, find the path to your pic (you can upload many at a time I believe) and then upload it into your 'album' then it gives you the img tag or the url to link directly to it =)
i love um
