JordanRoots Chameleon WIP Avatar
JordanRoots | 11/24/2007 @105 | Edit edit post
This is a homework for school. We have to use color contrasts: Hot and cold colors.
Were I not in such a hurry, I'd write a longer description. Sorry :s

help is appreciated :)

looks like a cool concept, and it's great to see something so different from you. well for now, i think it's all about detailing and definition. find some photo refs of sky/clouds and landscapes and observe them intensely while painting, i think that would produce a much better end result than texture/effect brushes. as for the area in the middle where the two world are gonna be fused together, i bet you'll do well, whether it's a very sharp shift or no. i think it would be kind of cool if the shift happened gradually

Great to see some new work in progress. I'm really liking the background so far! Keep it up :)

Since Chameleons are able to change color to match their surroundings, you have a wonderful opportunity to make your main focal point (the chameleon) blend into the background, with only the depth values, and his eyes and tongue actually differentiating him from the environment around him.

The rocks on the cold side look great!
This is an interesting assignment. Looks good!

Looking good man. Keep in mind to adjust contrast and texture levels as you proceed from here. One thing to think about is what you wish to accent more, the chameleon or the background, and make adjustments accordingly. All sorts of ways to do that. Looking cool so far. Keep it up! (B)

Grabbed some references for later.

While these may help you with texture and anatomy they won't help with matching the skin tones to the background.

MAriam, Thanks for your comment. I think I'll totally rework the clouds on the hot side, I'm not very happy with them, I'll do like you say and use references. :) Thanks again!

Thanks Intisar!

Maddy, Thank you. This is exactly what I planned to do, make it blend in the background. I did not think about making it a tongue though, should I?

MATÍAS: thank you!

Hey Tristan! Long time no see! I missed your big comments
Thanks very much for the references, I'll use them for remaking the sky on the hot side. And, whether I want to accentuate more the chameleon or the bg, I don't really know. I want a very detailed background, something I don't do often. I never really got into landscapes, this is kinda a premiere for me. :)

I started the chameleon, it's not finished yet. I do it in black and white because I want to focus on the values first and then I'll make it merge with the background. I shaded it on another computer than mine, so the contrast aren't the same I had. I'll have to fix that. I worked a lot the the texture (does not come from a photo BTW) and I'm quite satisfied with it.

the big version is here: http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m55/JordanRoots/9-1.jpg

Texturing is looking good so far.
Remember to clearly define light sources. Not just for one object but for the image as a whole.
The shading feels a little confusing, not so much by itself, but when compared to the background.
Shading on the stick/wire/pipe looks good, though. (B)

Try to sharpen things up a little bit, the textures look good but the outlines of the shapes feel a bit too airbrushy.
(<- I now declare this a real word!!!) Almost like the edges are falling out of focus.

Keep at it! This is really starting to come together! :)

Also, as you progress further remember to scale details, or place smaller details less in the distance, if that makes any sense. Hopefully, that will help keep the tree looking like a distant tree instead of a close up miniature.
It also creates less work for you to concern yourself with, as you only need the most detail on the focus point of the image.

I don't have any suggestions though! Looking great the way you're going! <3

Thanks Sandra :)

Matías a well, thanks !

Tristan: I haven'T worked on the chameleon since you commented, but you are absolutely right. your comments are ery precious to me, they keep me in the right track, i'm glad you are here this time around. :)
I'm not sure I understood what you meant about the scaling thing though. you mean less things far away or more?

Thanks Angi

Update:

if you guys can tell what I'm doing for the hot background then I'm glad, coz I ain't sure it actually looks like something.. :s

Re: JordanRoots Chameleon WIP Avatar
ethegaurde | 11/26/2007 @111 | Editedit post
Basically what I mean was that you don't need as much detail on individual trees far away, but there may or may not be more of them. While in the foreground there will be a much higher level of detail on each object.

Tristan, I understand what you mean. I'm going for a very detailed background though, since I want it to be as important as the chameleon in the foregroung. I know it impossible to have focus on both things but thats the concept .. ohm, and I just realised that I made the hot background with a completely different lightsouce than the cold one...

anyways, here's an update:

bigger: http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m55/JordanRoots/c-9.jpg

I still need to rework the hot clouds.
I'll add ice mountains in the cold background.

I got a dilemma, should I make a very sharp transition or a smooth one?

Re: JordanRoots Chameleon WIP Avatar
ethegaurde | 11/26/2007 @133 | Editedit post
If you think you can wing it go for a smooth one. Tends to keep the image looking clean that way, where as an abrupt transition might end up too distracting.

yeah, I think that too, but damn it would be easier were I to make an abrupt one. I'll make a smooth one, I just need to find something... for now I'd don't really like the cold side... it feels weird. I like the river, but not the mountains. I think I'll start it over too, along with the hot coulds.

I got a problem. I work with two monitors; one is a LCD and the other is a CRT. one screen is darker than the other, but I don't know which on has has the right settings. so I'm asking you this:
1 - Can you see the green line there ?
2 - Can you see the faint blue outline under the green one?

on my CRT monitor, I can't see them, but can with the LCD one.

Yep i can see the green, the blue is recognizable as blue although it tends to be a bit grey on my monitor.

Looking good so far!

I would deffo go for a smooth transition of the bakcground/clouds (which is aslo more challenging).

Looking forward to your next update:)

Thanks Vincent! I adjusted the CRT monitor so that it be brighter :)

great work so far, but the left side of the chameleon don't look like it has changed his color, it looks more than the chameleon is transparent.

Woah! Awesome details on the chameleon!
I think you should make a wider transition between the warm and the cold sides. Seems like you can just put a line between them, and you got yourself 2 postcards, now^^.

That"s almost exactly the same thing I told one of my friends this morining, I told him that I still needed to work on the chameleon because I didn't want it to look like it were made it glass, but rather wanted it to look like it were changing color. :) thanks for your comment!

Mert: I agree thanks!

You are doing great! The background looks very nice. I agree that the clouds should be smooth(but a little dynamic too. ;) ). I kinda wish the background would have been the same place, but this way looks fine too.
The colors looks fine on my monitor. I can see the green area, but the blue looks more greyish on my monitor as well.

Are you gonna keep the chameleon see-trough? If so that would look really cool!
