Hi all, Lately, I've been toying with the idea of creating a manga and eventually animating it with adobe flash or something like that. I have an excellent idea for my series, but I am severely lacking in the art department. Basically, I don't need to develop a complex and insanely realistic style, but it does need to look good. What I'm imagining is a style similar to that of Cowboy Bebop or Gungrave: http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e377/aiabunaibaka/Gungrave/BrandonHeatGungrave.jpg http://www.mochamemoirs.com/nic/blog/uploaded_images/CowboyBebopDVDBoxSet-768059.jpg What I'm wondering, is what will put me on the path to be able to draw in a similar way. I'm guessing I'd have a much easier time learning to draw on paper, and then scanning into photoshop and inking the pics. I guess I'm looking for some tutorials that would help me develop a mature anime style like that (most of the tutorials I've found yield a kiddie style that is unappealing and unfitting for my project). Also, some tutorials on taking a photo of a person and transforming it into a drawn work in the vein of bebop or gungrave would be of much help. I know that I am probably getting ahead of myself here, but I am really quite enthusiastic about this. I'd like to build up my skill over the next few months and at least make the physical manga. When I arrive at college next fall, hopefully with an issue of my manga, I think I will be able to attract animators and other artists to my project so I can really stick to writing, which is more my thing. Thanks, this seems like an excellent forum and I will be posting up works to reflect my progress! |

Can you draw, in general? If you can, you can pick up manga style easily enough. If you can't, then it will look bad no matter how much stylistic elements you pick up. You need solid drawing, composition, perspective, at least some anatomy before you can make a good contour drawing used in manga. Quirks like exact eye shapes or hair spikes are incidental; manga depends on strong composition and combining detailed drawing with symbolic marks in specific proportion. If you can handle that, then you can handle manga. |

| Anime on the otherhand ... less detail more action, but you do have to put in stylish stuff regardless, just less if it's to be moving. |

My advise for you is: Don't rush. If you focuss too much on your project before learning how to draw you will be easily frustrated. Learning how to draw manga style without previous drawing experience like arenhaus says, can take several years. Take this artist for instance: - http://pokefreak.deviantart.com/art/Quest-for-Improvement-50712373 If you already have some drawing skills it's just a matter of style really. |
