all the 'little persons' are white Avatar
Phos | 03/17/2008 @020 | Edit edit post
I don't frequent this forum very often so I don't know if I am repeating an old issue or not-- the thread on new GFX features is old and long and I do not have time to read thru it; and the newest news in from Martin however much appreciated is an excellent example of the point I want to make

I don't intend this to be politicised or create a bunch of angry feelings, but hope it might simply spark a little thot and kindness.....the other day I was looking at someone's work and glanced at the 'little person' by their name (not our avatars) but the 'little person' we all have that id's something about our membership here at GFX. this is when I saw the incongruity. it happened to also strike me in Martin's new News (the little graphic you can find here) Update and GFXartist Team Changes

I'm not trying to point the finger at Martin for anything--just using his little graphic as a great example-- and no hard feeling intended at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

anyway, here's what its all about. we have people of color other than white ethnicity as members on GFX but they have no choice but to have a little white person represent them. I strongly doubt that this is in anyway intentional but can we put some intentional thot into this? we're artists here!! :) certainly we can come up with little person's of other color should someone wish to claim that as an option, don't ya think??
just trying to be thotful

Im not quite getting it: Do you want us to be able to choose what colour jacket we are wearing. Or are you saying GFXmods are racists? :p

Damn, I gotta go catch some sleep :)

well your little person is blue
well she has a blue shirt on
the little people the site has used they have used those for ever.
I dont have a problem with it
and I have never heard anyone else have a problem with it either..
so I dunno

Re: all the Avatar
Phos | 03/17/2008 @038 | Editedit post
I see this simply as something to consider.
I was afraid of bringing this up for all the REACTIONS it could lead to. but,
I thot it a worthy thing to consider.
I've been a member here for 9 months and never ever did this incongruity occur to me until this past week. so you cannot claim I'm screaming 'racist' on GFX, becuz I'm not.

is it possible to have some dialog without assuming negetive things about someone?
I intend no accusation on anyone but simply ask to consider something overlooked. isn't that what this forum is for?
it is human to overlook-- we all do it including myself

can you make your point cause now im a tad confused why you started the thread. is it you just dont like the color of them or you think members should have the option to pick what they want
they all mean something
see here---> http://www.gfxartist.com/about/FAQ/12581/
maybe that will better explain. I have to admit your thread did come off sounding as if you were thinking GFX was racists using a white little person

Re: all the Avatar
Phos | 03/17/2008 @089 | Editedit post
I'm sincerely sorry if I sounded accusing GFX as racist. If I thot GFX was such - I would not be a member here.
In all my communications with GFX personnel I have been treated with politeness and respect and have not one reason for any complaint.

I simply saw an incongruity. it seemed fair to mention as something to discuss or consider on the forum. whatever should be done, the intent was, would be the result of any discussion that occurred on this thread. the point is the incongruity. that's it.

I took a big risk with a very touchy subject. the hope was that there might be careful and thotful consideration in response.....

Phos, you are referring to the colour of the skin of the little icon ?

Re: all the Avatar

Does everything have to be PC these days??

Seriously, it's like the human (mostly the white part of it) race has become scared of itself and paranoid in case something, anything could be taken the wrong way. How far do we go? "all of the co-co pops are a brown colour, so this must make white folks feel like they are not being included" "we can't produce cars in certain colours any more because it may offend certain people" "The English flag must not be displayed in certain places in case it offeneds immigrants" (that last one is true)

Trust me, the people that do pick on things like this (not yourself obviously) do have political agenders of their own and they are for the most part, not good.

I don't mean to be rude but countries that are mostly made up of white people seem to be the only ones that are so afraid of being called 'racist' for any reason they can come up with, these seriously silly new 'rules' keep geting introduced.

The West has gone quite mad whilst the rest of the world simply gets on with their lives and their way of life without fear of being chastised for it.

PS: All of the elites are yellow so does that mean it's insulting to orientals?

Just a thought.

@Almost-Human,, yes the color of skin. I'm not even intending political correctness altho I realize that many people may not see that. let me say it how I saw it.....I was looking at someone's work and the subject was a figure of dark skin. while thinking about how to c&c I glanced over and saw the 'little white person'. I thot to myself, oh, we have members who are not ethnically white but they get white representations. I suppose political correctness may have influenced my thinking, but what I wondered was, what if I had dark skin. what would it be like to have a little white person.... would it matter to me? would I want a correct representation of who I was? how would it feel to me if I had dark skin but lived in this western world of white especially in the artist communitty? and so I thot, maybe some consideration should be given to this.....and so I started this thread.

I'm thrilled that GFX supports an international artist community. but I just stopped for a moment and tried to look at things from the point of view if I had dark skin, and it seemed important

Sorry, but the elite members are golden or yellow?.
By the way, the ordinary "little persons" are too small to notice how much "arian" they are so i couldn't tell if they are japanese or untanned latin american or european because i can't see the shape ot the eyes, nose, etc.
II love the way they are, if they change them, i leave GFX, but i guess nobody cares.

If all of the little people here were brown, I wouldn't be too bothered about it. It just depends on the person, it'd be a cool thing to have when starting up a new account as it adds another dimension about the person.

The political reasons are the wrong ones in my view however because it should be a nice detail not a political correctness statement, that just feels pressurized, preconsidered and darn right condesending.

People my age commonly refer to Asians as "Orientals". Purely by Occident. No harm intended.

I think it might be hard to distinguish one color from another in many cases in those tiny little heads

Hi Phos,

You raise a good point. I wanted to have all kinds of icons, but unfortunately I discovered that when that part of the system was already built. Our icon's filenames are constructed of "user"_ "status (1-4)"_"male or female"_"normal or elite"_"paying or not paying".gif

I am personally not one to immediately take the race angle but I did hesitate when I gave the female icon blond hair. Up until that point the icons were quite iconic, but now they had become little characters. Caucasian girls with dark hair may feel just as weird being represented by the icon as girls or guys with a different skin tone.

I would love to have more customization regarding the icons, not to be politically correct but simply because its fun to make the 'little person' icon look like yourself. Unfortunately that's not within reach right now when it comes to the icons, hence your graphic avatars where you can depict yourself or something that represents you in any way you like.

I'm fine with mine, but then, I AM bald, have big ears, don't shave very often and draw round my head with a big blue pen ;-)

just for kicks martin why dont you toss a contest for the icons?
we have lots of designers maybe some members wouldn't mind making them?
a whole set made for all kinds of people (I would like a rocker chick with a Mohawk)
once made then people can choose from a list like smiles what they want?
and yes smiles as well me like smiles =P
I know you have a bunch of smiles already uploaded but you have to type it in to see them
just an idea =)

ps I was just teasing with the Brett manip! but it had to be done to break him into GFX ;)
my silly tradition *hehe*

you forgot with a female avatar I never understood why dudes would do that and it confuses the heck out of me!
example thienbao's avatar is always a female for the longest time when talking with him I would refer to him as a girl till one day hes said Pam im a MAN!
oh man how embarrassing =S

I always thought that Asian was too wide a term as Asians range from Indians to Japanese...

Seems that I too have been left behind by the PC brigade.

kittyKat: is there any difference between being white and being satanic? i thought all white heterosexual males were carriers of the Hitler-Gene which made them "evil by default".
Juro: not to mention that australian or russian people com from the Orient too, so Nicole Kidman, Wladimir Askenazi or Mel Gibson are also "oriental".
