What makes a painting perfect? Avatar
pyrokid | 03/17/2008 @853 | Edit edit post
Art is something many regard as an personal hobby and only a handful from artists communtiy have even infringed on this question. Is it composition, the render, the overall goodness of it or is a perfect painting oone that meets its makers goals.

I think this is something which all artists everywhere would love to know, so I think it's time to answer it.

I really don't know so don't bother asking me, I thought it was something evreybody in this community could do with.

hmmm...art is subjective, and so is the term 'perfect' What a combo :p

Me personally, if I meet a goal that I had set out (in a technical sense) then I find it a success. If there is an extrinsic value, and the viewer keeps coming back to view it again and again then I would call that a success as well.

But perfect? If I made a perfect piece of art I wouldn't have a need to continue would I? :p I'd rather stick with successful...and keep striving for perfect ;)

So aslong as something meets it's goals it is a sucsess but sucsess and perfection are really quite far apart. I think context is something has to involved as well. So if you set out to make a a monster that sends shivers down your back and turns people hair white is that perfection, wait that sounds like exceeding expectations. This is hard to crack.

I guess a beholder is likelier to tink a certain painting is perfect than the artist who painted it.

All Art is communication of ideas and emotions from the artist to the observer.

A 'Perfect' piece of art is one that communicates the desired ideas and emotions exactly. So that the observer knows exactly what ideas and emotions the artist was portraying through the piece.

Whether that Art is a 'painting' a piece of writing, a speech, a song or any other form of creative expression.

Is fantasy a good thing to have I love fantasy, it's much more catchy then most genres of art, so does a perfecct painting have to be in the fantasy genre?

In speculation: The perfect painting would stand on its own, and perhaps need no such question.

No such thing as perfect art as there are no perfect artists creating it.

Vis à vis art is subjective, objective and the perspective of each individual artist and viewer/participant.

so what your sayng is that there is no point even trying to seek perfection, rather point out the obstructions in the path to it. I read a book a long time ago aboutt he right side of your brain(drawing on the right side of your brain, it is a good book, I was 8 and I got bored reading it and stopeed but it is good now i think about it again) it says not explicitly but implicitly that once the right side of your brain takes over you don't know what impossibilty is, the right side of your brain being teh creative one, hint hint...

Thanks, I never really understood that book really, well I was only 8 but theres something about it, I think the ability to control which part of your brain functions more is just creepy, it's like saying you can control your looks, impossible because your brain is too complex to explain fully using the lack of spaces given by her, just creepy and weird.

There are some few artists who have created some masterpieces which makes the observer feels that there's no way those artworks could be improved because the slightest change would lower their value.
At the same time, such masterpieces challenge the human mind to find out what do they hide because each time you look at it, you discover something you had not noticed before, therefore you never get tired of gazing at it.

"The Fighting Temeraire tugged to her Last Berth to be broken up" by Joseph Mallord William Turner is my idea of a perfect painting:

I'm not undermining the works of Turner(I actually like his work quite a lot and enjoy recreating his landscapes at school) however aestetics is involved, if the painting makes you turn back to it but it's not very aesthetic er... doesn't really hit it for me, it seems like a bad song which sticks in your mind, you want to get rid of it. So when you are turning back to it you'd probably get annooyed and give up on it because not many people have a long patience anymore.

I certainly disagree.

Even though the color palette is wonderful.
I don't like the smoke of the ship for example (shouldn't the light come from the opposite direction?). Though I shouldn't complain, because I'm technically far behind.

But for me there needs to be a bit more involving storytelling going on. This is a work I'd most likely forget, if it wasn't for the colors. I don't dig the theme. I assume it'd be more captivating if I'd see it full sized and original hanging inside a museum.
But it's FAR from being perfect. It's just a romantic view with a nice calm atmosphere.
[hides himself from rocks flying in his direction]

Go to a school and show them the Mona Lisa.
I bet most kids don't give a shit.
It's all about taste...

I did not, when I was your age and I wrote "MOST kids". I was more into Iron Maiden Coverart. haha.
But if you value it high, that's cool with me. Don't get me wrong, I also like the Mona Lisa. I just couldn't think of any other painting that's been mentioned more in my presence.

All I wanted to say is: Tastes are different.
One may like it, another may bore it.
The world is crowded with 6,7 billion people!
There's no way, that you can show me a painting everyone gets dragged into, which would make it "perfect".

Hope that clears it.

How about a painting that includes every single person in the world, then that way everyone would like it, just need to figure out who would paint it...
Actually I perfer Nickelback, Lynyrd Skynard and RATM.
