Hi,

In Corel Painter X, I'd test the following on a copy of my image:

1. With the flattened image on the Canvas, Select > All, then click inside the selection using the Layer Adjuster tool to lift the Canvas to a Layer. Or, if the imagery I wanted to sand was already on a Layer, In the Layers palette, I'd highlight that Layer.

2. Create a Layer Mask and click to highlight the Layer Mask icon to the right of the Layer icon.

3. Choose a sandpaper Paper.

4. Choose black as the Main color.

5. Choose the Charcoal's Charcoal variant.

6. Paint on the Layer Mask... on the Property Bar, adjusting Opacity very low to somewhere between 4% and 8% and, in the Papers palette, adjusting the sliders and Invert button as needed to produce the sanded image effect I wanted.

Here's one of my custom Papers libraries containing a couple of sandpaper papers I created a while back.

Jins_Two_Sandpapers.zip

Extract the Zip file into the Corel Painter X main application/program folder. Then, in Painter X, go to the Papers palette menu, choose Open Library, navigate to the Painter X main application/program folder, highlight Jins_Two_Sandpapers.papers and click the Open button to load the Jins_Two_Sandpapers Papers library.

Happy Sanding!

this is devious! I will give this a try, tho in just reading your instructions it sounds more like simply using a mask to reveal a sandpaper paper-effect rather than truly a sandpaper brush. (??) If this is correct, Painter needs to make the ability for a sandpaper brush!!

Here's another question for you, Jinny: I have not found a way to use a brush without any color, say for example, a bristle brush. do you know how to load a brush without any color?

thank you very much!! I'll take a look at the zip file you provided.

A brush without any color? If you mean something like a blender, then set the resat value to 0. If you mean an eraser, open the brush creator and set it to the appropriate brush type.

hi liiga
are you saying you can create a brush (in the brush creator), such as a bristle brush type, with the capacity to erase--
like with natural media, using a brush with no color on it to take away paint and leave a textured look behind? I'm grateful for any tips. thank you,
Phos

Did you even open Brush Designer? :p
Under General there's Method, next to it a drop-down menu with stuff like Eraser. Play around with it.

When we talk about sanding a surface (using sand paper), we're talking about removing the surface, to one degree or another and revealing what's below that surface.

If what you really want is to apply color with a "sandpaper brush", you're not sanding to remove part of the surface the surface, but adding something ( in this case, paint/color ) to the surface.

If you want what you describe as a "sandpaper brush", use the Charcoal's Charcoal variant, choose a color, choose one of the two Papers in my custom Papers library, and paint on either the Canvas or a Layer. If instead what you want is to sand away color, use the method I described above and paint on a Layer Mask.

I think you've already been given the answer but I'm still curious to know exactly what result you want to produce painting with no color on the brush. If you can elaborate, I might be able to offer more specific suggestions.

Hi Phos, having never used sandpaper on a painting I don't know the effect you're after and to be honest I'm not sure others do either. Any chance you could post an image of something so we can try to copy it?

@Raphael, this is a technique that I've read about and not yet tried, so I have nothing of my own to show . but here is some info that I have: one is, "The North Light Illustrated Book of Painting Techniques" by Elizabeth Tate, my version reprinted in 1991. On page 64 there is one illustration of her using sandpaper to create a very textured look. she uses a piece of fine grade sandpaper to gently scrape away paint (I bet you could google sandpaper and painting and find an image). as many different kinds of instruments and brushes can be used to create texture by removing paint, sandpaper is just another. this is my wish for all these digital painting programs that they would create the ability of a variety of tools which can be used for the sole purpose of removing paint. when I have an example of my own (digital) I'd be happy to upload it here to show what I mean -- but it will be some kind of product from what others have said here.

Jinny, I hope I have made it clear now what I'm after. removing color/paint. thank you again for your input!

Ok, here's a very fast example following Jinny's instructions in her first post. I made the sandpaper-paper with my own adjustments (I've never posted an image in the forum so I hope I get it right.....)

this has 1 layer of a two-toned watercolor wash, 1 layer of mauve chalk, 1 layer of liquid ink (black). I applied the sandpaper effect only to the ink.

well, I knew I'd have a problem trying to upload it into the forum.

I will say that the technique Jinny gave in her first post gave exactly the results I wanted!

That's exactly what I thought you meant. Sanding to remove paint. ;)

I have put up my example of using sandpaper as a tool-- as described earlier here in this thread
I have posted it in my Blog section

http://phos.gfxartist.com/blog

this has a blue-green watercolor wash, topped by mauve chalk, and topped off with black liquid ink
you can sand as much or as little as you desire through the various layers
this is a very quick sample of what kind of effect I was looking for....

this example is at the request of Raphael

Kinda fun, isn't it, sanding away paint?

Depending on the Paper you use when sanding, the sanded texture can be very interesting. My sandpaper Papers were pretty boring, unless you want that simple result.

Try it with a lot of different Papers to see what I mean.

Then you can sand using different Papers on different Layers all in the same image and get an even more complex and interesting result.

this sounds interesting Jinny. thank you. I'll try your added ideas-- I especially like the idea of sanding with different papers on different layers of the same image. for me this is also is a lesson in the power of masks which I've been learning about in PS, and now applying in painter. oh, I've found ink to be a great medium to sand on cuz it really has that 'soaking into the paper' effect. when sanding on it it leaves behind a great blending look.

the example I put in my blog is just a cropped out portion of the image due to size constraints. I thot that would be better to view than resizing the image
