Face help
Mecharissa | 05/10/2008 @900 | Edit edit post
Hi, I'm trying to draw a some what realistic face for my painting but something still seems off. It seems all my drawings always look cartoony and never believable so I was wondering if you could help me point out something I could fix and how I could go about fixing it. I'm still working on it so the hair isn't complete yet.

Hi Carissa,
There are a few proportion issues with your picture, I could start to list them but it's easier to show you.

I took your image into Photoshop and used the liquify tool to correct a few, I hope you don't mind.

If you take it and compare to yours you should start to see where you need to work.

I only spent 2 minutes on it so it's not perfect but it should help some :)

Nothing wrong with anime proportions like big eyes, but if you're going for realism you need to study up on facial anatomy. It's not that you're way off, but it's that last 2% of inaccuracy which is contributing to your feeling that something is not quite right. If you look at the bridge of the nose, between the eyes, you're missing a key between the eyes. Most people have a gradual curve extending from the key down to the nose. On your drawing this is perfectly flat, like a helmet bridge guard. The mouth does not look anchored to her face. It helps if you create an under drawing of a skull first. You would then know that the skull area near above the teeth actually protrude forward a bit, in your drawing there is no room for this area so she looks like she doesn't have room for teeth in her mouth.

Hey Carissa, when i look at this i wouldn't view it as a mistake. Watch this space, i'm going to create a small tut which really easy to use which will help in making sure proportions are generally correct. Beyond that the best way to learn anatomy is from real life, and it's much more fun ( or uncomfortable :) ) too. Photo's and books help as well but they rarely point out the important milestones and so forth.
