Just cant get it right...
Soapy5 | 07/22/2008 @406 | Edit edit post
Hey everybody. I been inactive for a looooooooooooonnnng time and now that I have some free time, I thought I'd do my first real digital painting. I'm going for a concept sketch-like pic of Samus but just cant get her anatomy right. (Seriously, I'm gonna go and buy a book tomorrow. --speaking of which, anyone know of a good one?) My main problems are the hands and face. the hands just look to man-like, and the face.. well, blah. I've looked at face anatomy sites online, but I'm not trying to get a 100% realistic face (i doubt I could pull that off if i wanted to anyway), nor am I going for the anime look-- maybe something in betweenish....

okay, as I was writing this, I looked a bit harder at the face and did some changes. now she doesnt look like a cave troll anymore, but I still cant put a mouth on that, and the nose is on its side. and the eyes are still iffy. okay, maybe the whole face is weird, i dunno (thats why im here :p ). anyways, please critique, redline, etc. I need to learn.

EDIT: sorry about the quadruple post.... :p
Double EDIT: the pic is a bit squished, so please see it on the actual site ^^^

Triple EDIT: okay, after looking at it a bit more, i realized that everything from the shoulders up is too high. or the torso is too long. i think...

I've been working on the head for a bit, and made some improvements. there still something not right there (maybe her left eye?) i guess im drawing with the wrong side of my brain...

also, her mouth isnt what i had in mind, and i just can get that cocky-but-not-slutty look......

as for the rest of the body, i fixed some of the anatomy problems, but then i realized the pose was too wierd/ boring, so ill work on that later.

I think the biggest problem for you is that you haven't been studying anatomy books a bit before throwing yourself into adventures like these. At least using a model as a reference would make the job so much easier. Right now you're creating something out of your mind, though you're not sure what it looks like in the first place, and that is a very tough job. I'd suggest you make someone pose for you so you can do a quick sketch and then work from that. It would be much easier.
About the eyes, well, the thing is, no one really has eyes like those. They're too big and they're too slanted to look realistic.
I'll do a quick paintover to show you what I mean

awesome, thanks. just one question: how did you line up the ear horizontal-wise?

Not sure I get your question. You mean how I found the spot for the ear so it's niether too close to the face or too far back in the head? Well, to tell you the truth I have no idea, I've been doing this stuff for too long to notice if I follow any rules with most of this stuff :p There's probably a rule about dividing the face into smaller bits and working from there..I think the safest option is to follow the jaw. The ear would have to be directly behind the line that goes from the angle of the jaw and up to the hairline at the temple..I think, lol, might wanna check those anatomy drawing books to make sure I'm not bullshitting you.
I noticed I haven't corrected the line of the back of the neck on the drawing. It would start from around the middle of the ear instead of being behind it.
