WIP - Killadore's Friend portrait Avatar

Hi everyone
First of all, hope you all had a great start with this new year. Personally I'm all tied up in exams, but I can't help misbehaving and doing something creative at the same time.
So I decided to share this stuff with you.

It started as just a small, fun, doodle project..but grew and is still growing into something more. Like all of my projects usually do. I started out with a photo I took of my friend at one of our photo sessions, and decided to figure out if I can pull off a more cartoonish kind of style this time.

This is the reference pic, taken some time in 2006, I had to zoom in about 200% to work with it since it's very small:

From now on, it's all happenin' in Photoshop, baby!

So I took the reference pic and I traced it. Since I thought this wouldn't be a big project, I decided to cheat and trace the original pic. I'm against it and all, but in this case it saves time and I know I'd be able to draw the image pretty accurately anyways, so time saving was my first priority here.
Still haven't figured out how to use vectors, so using a simple hard edged brush did the trick
And we got this:

As you can see I decided to make the dress longer and to modify her hair a bit, and for now I don't know what she's sitting on, but we'll get there! :p
Next step:
Creating a new layer I start simply coloring the image. At this point the reference image is only needed for the face.
Also I decided to add some vines, tracing the ones in the photo and give her a second foot even though it still looks kinda weird in my eyes...but we'll work on that later :)

Next step; picking a color for the dress and working more on her skintone

I realized I hadn't done much in green lately, so..

And there's a glossy, green dress for her

Final step for today:
I colored the feather and turned the flowers a golden kind of color :)

Great work so far! I really like how you colored her dress. You've captured the sence of the fabric. :)
But umm.... that foot... well you told you would work on it later, so I'll not crit it for now. :p
I like her red-ish skintones, it looks good against the dress. The shading might be a bit strange on her chest though, the highlight going down towards her breasts looks too strong, which makes the anatomy look a bit weird...

Thanks, Sandra :) Yep, I know about the chest and the foot, it's because I haven't defined the shoulders enough. But that's because there's gonna be other stuff there, so I've let that part be for now until I figure out a good way to design 'it' ;) I'm glad you like the dress, though I'm thinking of pushing the depth on it a bit more. Right now there's sort of too many folds in some places and no real shape. Thanks a bunch for the critique!

I like a lot so far.
All I can do is repeat what Sandra said, I like the color you use and everything looks beautiful. Very nice work on the new foot.
I'm really impatient to see what you are going to do with the background. Is it going to be dark, light? anyways, since you are using strong colors for the character, I'd advise not to use too saturated colors for the bg in order to make the person stand more. You surely already know about that though..
Do you intend on keeping the lines?

only one crit though, I think she would look prettier with longer hair, like the reference. Or if you want to keep them shorter, they could use a bit more work IMO. I dunno, it seems like there is no hair under the right part of the hair. Can be just me though.

Thanks for the comments, Jordan, nice to see you around here again :) Hmm, I'll have to see about the hair. I don't think I'll change the length since I'm not going for a totally conventional look here, but maybe I'll work more on the tones. Yeah, I'm keeping the lineart!
About the background, well you kinda just have to wait and see, hmm?

And thank you, Mr. EOS!
