Artist's 'day job'?
Unknown visitor | 04/11/2003 @458 | Edit edit post
Hello all,

I'm currently studying a librarianship, so that I can actually have a job that will support me while I make art. Sure, I'd love to be doing this full time one day - wouldn't we all? But...ehh, let's face it, until you get yourself out there and get steady work coming in and get your skills up to scratch, you just can't give up your day job. Hence me studying. Boring and time consuming, but necessary for survival. It ain't fair.

Ssso, my question is this - what are some of the 'day jobs' people have out there to support themselves when their art doesn't (yet)? I'm not talking about people who are currently being supported by their parents or partners, either (grrr! How sweet your lives are...) but people who have to support themselves by means other than art. My previous day job was so time consuming I quit because I had no time or energy left for art...do other people have this problem too?

Heh sounds like HungerArtist has something along the lines of my work.

I am a Security Guard for a Bank and get to wear a big yellow jacket that blinds all those that oppose me.

Production assistant at Spümcø (the animation studio responsible for 'Ren & Stimpy' and 'Ripping Friends'). I used to do Flash animation here but times've changed and nobody wants to pay for Flash junk. Someday I hope to manage to move on to layout here.

sounds like im your opposite catapult. Used to make a living off design - decided that i'd had enough of getting a wage and have gone back to being a poor student. But if you're interested in doing design as a job, then the best way to learn it is to do it :)

I'm a, "god forbid", civil engineer by day.

It's kinda nice though. It lets me get the logical off my mind so that I'm free for creativity when I do my painting, photography and photomanipulations in my free time.

I'm an assistiant fashion designer, although my job is more sending out order's of clothing I do get to occassionally design something, like mail out's or the catalog, and a website is next on the list of thing's to do.

Well fortunately I have a day job that, while not totally tapping into my artistic genius, lets me be creative. I'm a mechanical designer for DeWalt Tools. I use a program called CATIA to design and surface 3D models by day and Pen and Ink and Pencil to create my worlds at night :p
