Digital w/ tablet vs. Traditional Avatar
macskeeball | 05/27/2005 @167 | Edit edit post
Not long ago I got a Wacom Intuos3 tablet so that I could finally *create* on the computer. Before the tablet, I mostly used Photoshop for editing/mixing together and not creating except for the occasional pixel-by-pixel made images. I did my creating with traditional art, but now that I've got the tablet I have a hybrid at my disposal. For those of you with tablets, how do you decide whether to do something on the computer or off the computer? Is there a type of art that you feel is better accommodated by one then the other, or a stage in the artistic process?

It's not a stage, it's just another medium. Some works you feel you want to be in a particular medium; sometimes you just choose whatever is adequate. It's no different from considering whether to do some picture in graphite, ink, watercolor or acrylic. (Or vectors. Or whatever.)

different medias different aptitudes. CG isn't painting are computer graphic is different like foot/bicycle/car i think.
if you go compete with oil painter try oil painting n________n if you go to compete with CG, try CG. I'm right? i like CG and traditional art n_____n

I use my tablet for coloring the image but I've found I prefer drawing the thing out on paper and scanning it in. My tablet is a 4x5 so If i sketch into the comp I find myself using zoom alot and distorting the image.

Well, my design work is all digital and has been for quite some time, but I don't think I'll ever do another commercial illustration by traditional means, unless requested and compensated for.

I will always draw with pencil/charcoals and paint in oils because I like them even though I've done some portraiture digitally Autumn Angel by  DigitalDust Temptatious Tike by  DigitalDust that has met with client approval, so I wouldn't be opposed to and am pursuing digital fine art as time permits.

Personally, I prefer the feel/response of graphite on paper or brush on canvas to a stylus on tablet - but I'm getting used to it. And the flexibility of digital is oh-so-sweet!

Digital really isn't and/or, rather another medium for the artist to use.
