Suggestion: New categories? Avatar

Like, Elite, GFXartist sponsor BrainForest made a reference in his blog... it was a suggestion if there was any change in some categories like photomanip>light change that to surreal and another to misc. and so on...

While the main categories (painting, drawing, photography, etc) are not easy to change, subcategories are (I believe).

So if you have suggestions on how to better categorize works within a main category, feel free to post them here. As you can tell, photo manipulation was a bit of a tough one when the galleries were laid out.

retouched photos

Would that fall under photo manipulation or photography?

um...dunno. like when a photo has been touched up extensively so that it doesnt qualify as photography, but there isnt anything "maniped" about it.

It would make sense for painting categories of fantasy and sci-fi, on account of 99% of paintings being fantasy and sci-fi.

wouldn't it be much easier to just put descriptions on your works than puzzling over what subcatecories you need your work to be labeled to? you could just put your pictures on the photography section then say in its' description "it was in color but it really looks much better in black & white" or "just a retouching of an old picture". we could understand that. i mean, just as long as it is a photo and not much was manipulated. :)

I believe the categories are there to enable searching by genres.

How about a "landscape" category for photography. It would be more precise than nature. Some have also voiced a desire for a photo-journalism category.

Further emphasis on the 'My Profile Only' catagory. Many people seem to be posting lately with the 'oh-this-was-just-a-sketch-for-fun-don't-take-it-seriously-as-it-was-just-an-exercise'

Or..promote the speedpaint/sketch threads more...make em' sticky threads.

i didn't even knew that people replied this, because it said that i wasn't able to make this post.

so my suggestions are:
Photo Manipulation:
Dark (it includes macabre, horror, depression, sadness, you know all dark feelings)
Fantasy
Surreal
Sci-Fi
Uncategorized, which means misc., this category would include manips about people, animals, anything that didn't had a category, like the name says.
and perhaps landscape and scenery

Paintings
like baronimpossible said categories like fantasy, sci-fi, surreal, because most of people in here submit that, and perhaps take off the technology and vehicle? lol i don't know, i don't paint. i think painters should make their suggestions about this issue

the drawings perhaps should be something similiar.
3d modelling, perhaps change technology to sci-fi, i'm not sure.

the design category i think it looks okay.
now the photography one, why it is self portrait contest? perhaps it should be changed to portraits... and add the macro category, animals hmmm. photographers should talk about this too, i mean giving their suggestions.

How about macro, wildlife, scenery/landscape ... rather than having the broad subject of nature. To be honest, I don't find the subcategories all that important. I do not base my viewing of photos on this and rarely do I notice. Also, a subcategory for people shots such as what Madanapale posts ... say "portrait"

Feedback welcome

Michelle

When you think too hard about it, it gets all confusing. I think no matter what we have for subcategories, we'll always have too little or too many categories. I'd like to first concentrate on the major categories and straighten out the rules so everyone knows which one they fall into. Photos and Photo-manips have crossed lines a lot as well as Drawing and Painting.

Michelle, I'm with you on this as I don't pay much attention to the subcategories either. However, if a better search function were to come along, then maybe these subs might become more important.

We've been concentrating on the suggestions in this thread: New Features for GFX
Any more suggestions should go there. However, I've bookmarked this page too.

I'd also love to see a section where we could post photos but that won't show up in the galleries. Some time ago, I deleted all of my artwork ... (a PMS moment) and I would love to repost them all but at the same time not clog up the galleries with them.

Can anything be done?

emarts, i know but it bothers some people, like it bothers me, and i think it should be changed. i'm not saying for creating lots of subcategories with more sub and subcategory, like it exists in deviantart, because this is not deviantart. only add some, and take some that are not useful.

Acida has a good idea and i think people should be made aware of the difference of design and drwing/painting because most of the pics posted in design does nto belong there

Michelle, did you actually delete them or just unpublish them?

A sketch pad section for subscribers would be cool.

Okay, I've officially made this a sticky, but that's it. Keep the suggestions to this and the New Features for GFX forum. It's difficult for us to keep track of multiple forums for suggestions. :)

COMICS!
I just don't know under which main category should it be...Drawing or Design...if colored, maybe even Painting

Maybe i am the only one who does that kind of work...but every time i must post it under drawings-uncategorised...and I think the ninth art deserves a category...or maybe i am just selfish and want to have a random top artwork :)

Really, try to consider this...maybe then, people will start making comics, and there will be competition.
for starters, I will do my best...think "abootit" and send me a PM if you decide to do something...

There are a lot of constructive comments from others...try to make this system better, and everyone will appreciate it. :)

Cheers

I agree with Elite, GFXartist sponsor MsMichelleLynn on creating macro, wildlife, landscape categories insted of the broad subject of nature.

Where does vector art goes?

Why there doesnot exist any category for vectors?

I think it is much needed category here.

Re: Suggestion: New categories? Avatar
Wysiwyg | 04/09/2006 @715 | Editedit post
Vectors have always been going to the Drawing catagory...as you are drawing with the b. curves...(usually)

There are some changes that could be made...I'm still trying to figure out what Photomanip-Light means :p

I have a laundry list I need to compile from other PMs/forums to present to the admin.
