PM Spamming...knock it off Avatar
Wysiwyg | 09/23/2005 @014 | Edit edit post
For those who know me, know that I have no issues with critiquing people's work. Some members progress I follow intensely and they continually show growth (ie:GFXartist sponsor Juro and  eowyn, etc), so it's not unsual for them to PM me to let me know they have a new one up. That's cool, and I appreciate the heads up as I don't want to miss what could be a milestone in their creative development.

But for those who just keep PMing me to check out their work, and haven't even the courtesy to crit my latest, or any of my works....it's just pretty freaking annoying and downright rude.

Now I don't know if I'm getting these PMs b/c they saw a crit I did and hoped to get a techinical no bullshit response, or just because I'm on a list of those who are online at the moment, but dammit man, don't expect to receive if you aren't going to give.

This is just a courtesy heads up, knock it off...

I don't even know why I'm typing this....those who do this kind of crap don't even participate in the forums...they just want their daily fix of +10

Yeah it is slightly annoying. I have told a few people to remind me when they post new works because I am also interested in their progress or just like their artwork.

I must say though that I dont get that many pm's so maybe they are expecting your indepth critiques too Brett. Maybe you have made yourself too valuable critique-wise. I reckon it could be taken as an honour (as well as a curse) in some cases as no one really asks for my opinion because I dont get down to the nitty gritty, or offer as much time on my critiques.

If it was just for votes I'd expect to get as many pm's as you as I am on here a lot also.

Anyway stop pestering Brett if you are after points!!!! He'll take you down! He'll take you down to China Town.

P.S I reckon a lot on here know your stance on not voting anymore so that may point even more to them just wanting the constructive comments! Sorry, I aint helping you here am I? hahaha.

yeah same happens to me too. i make it a point to never crit or vote someones work if they pm me about it. it just doesnt feel right.

I second that! I don't get many PM's asking for votes/crits, but when I do I tend not to take advantage of the offer. Begging is begging, regardless of what form it takes!

Some people may want the advice of an artist that they admire, but then it should be obvious if they've written out a personal PM politely asking if someone could comment/or send a PM with suggestions on what they could do to improve. If it's a short message then you could probably assume that they've sent the message to everyone else who was online at that time!

Remember, there is a thread started for the purpose of fishing for comments (just don't spam that, people don't appreciate (well I dont) when one artist appears numerous times on one page, particularily if it's for the same piece of artwork!).

The Post-a-Comment thread!

Why dont you PM everyone about it?

Unknown visitor | 09/23/2005 @422 | Editedit post
well, i got pm's too asking me to comment/vote people's works!
and if i did, they came to my gallerie, and said something like great, and gave me the highest vote!
i felt like a cheater, and deleted the stuff in my gallerie, (also because it was crap :p)

but it feels fake to get a reply from someone, you just commented on, especially if they have nothing more to say then
"great" and give you the highest vote!

Holy Crap Arne....I totally missed it! Thanks for the heads up :p

But seriously, I'm glad I'm not the only one...figured I wasn't. And thanks for the compliments Andy, but I'm just another little icon on the member list, nothing special...

The PMs I'm talking about usually are not personal at all...just advertisements like this one...

"Hello there, I really need a comment on my project, hope you've got time, thanks a lot!!!
Brochure 2005 by  nod423

Or they set up some sort of life long friendship I didn't know existed....such as this one.

"hello dear friend. would you be so kind to take a look at my new photo made from Notre Dame roof in Paris =)"
my time will come by  bbreeze

Now do I know these guys exist...yeah...have I looked at their work before...in passing...but this is straight up annoying. Don't pretend to be my friend, or just blatently demand I look at you work...you want my attention, crit my stuff and I'll return the favor, post in the Post A Comment thread as mentioned before, or create more attractive thumbnails.

Not that I only crit those who crit me...but if we have never had correspondence, and it's obvious your PM is just a generic message meant for anyone...c'mon.

Oh, and Andy, yeah I did stop voting about 8 weeks ago, but started again in the last 2 weeks...I saw alot of up and coming talent that was getting ignored, so I figured I would use my powers for good :p

I guess we can be thankful that the unsolicited PM's for vote/crits aren't followed by a short message about viagra or penis enlargement special offers!

There is only ever one reason why people (myself included) get pm's from someone they've never talked to and unfortunately it's points. In the case of this website points don't mean prizes, they don't mean anything. Give me an honest help crit any day of the week, as I've stated many times. I'm not bothered by these pm's just don't expect any points. :)

Re: PM Spamming...knock it off Avatar
DigitalDust | 09/23/2005 @820 | Editedit post
Color me confused on this topic, Wyzzy.

Granted, "pimping for points" thru PMs is annoying, but to say you are freaky annoyed by those who "haven't even the courtesy to crit my latest, or any of my works" and are "downright rude" for their negligence sort of smacks of another well debated weakness of the site (i.e.) cliques and vote trading, whether directly asked for or alluded to. If I've read you or your initial intent wrong on this one, lemme know and chastize me... :)

I'm more amused than annoyed about "feigned friendship" total strangers asking for crits (I mean, how well can any of use really know each other in a cyber community?). I'll check them out, but rarely acquiesce unless it was worth the trip.

In nod423's defense; I got a PM from him too to check out his work and it was worded differently than the quote you posted - so it seems it may not have been a mass PMing and more direct and sincere in wanting a crit as he didn't ask for points. The point is, I'll always give a "look-see" and leave comments and vote according to how I like the piece - if I don't like it, I won't comment or vote unless I feel I can give some constructive criticism.

Monkey-Boy, chimps' are proven to average about 3 inches - saw it on Discovery or Animal Planet or the like - who do you think you're kidding?

BaronImp, would that account for the low blood flow to the brain?!!

DigitalDust, even though this is only an online community and I have never met anyone off here, I must say that I have gotten to know quite a few ladies on here very, VERY well! Ok, granted, they have no idea who I am, or that I am stalking them, but I am sure they will like me if they met me. In fact I KNOW they will like me, they always do...apart from those that don't, and we don't mention them anymore.

well, i know i'm guilty of doing this too.... but i dont post works often and i love honest crits, as you know :) honestly, if you have a problem with someone msg'ing you about it just tell them so, i think that's better than publically displaying it here in your rant :p

i like it sometimes, because i forget about members even though i love their work.... i dont quite like random ones though, by people i've never seen before or never critiqued on my work!

so i guess, if you've shared crits with a member, then you can do so ???? i'd go along with that.

No prob DD, guess I wasn't clear enough...

When I say 'haven't the courtesy to crit my latest'...I'm referring to just a simple act of reciprocation. I personally wouldn't just PM someone had I not previously checked out their works....at least some sort of professional repore would have been established at that point...(having a history of critiquing someone's work for awhile, then PMing and asking for the same in return)

Or, there are some artists here I admire, and I would PM them saying, "Hey, I'm a fan of your use of perspecitve/limited color palletes etc. Would you mind checking out my latest, as I too am trying to build my skills in these areas."

By no means do I endorse the cliques/exclusive friendship circles here...hell, I'm probably the one who is the most blunt when addressing my distaste for them. This is a community yes, but don't call me your dearest bestest buddy in the whole wide world and we've had virtually no interaction on the site at all.

Bottom line is, I don't think I would have the audacity to PM a crit from a stranger had I not even taken the chance to crit theirs first...

As far as the different wording is concerned, there is no way of sending PMs to multiple members at the same time. So unless it is typed in Notepad or MS Word and copy pasted, I can see how it would be worded differently each time. I got another PM today from someone who showed me a screenshot of the message they got from Nod...and it was the same message with a little difference. Which is funny, cause their message was @982 on 9/21 while mine was @994 so I figure he was just going to town doing this.

Starqueen you are a perfect example of what I meant by an established professional relationship. We had a few debates in crits on certain works, and developed a raport, seeing where we each stood on our creative opinions...so when you PM'd me awhile back I had no issues with that, because I knew you were curious how I would interpret your photo. That to me is the way this place should work instead of blanketing the entire community with a PM.

hmm, i agree with most of what's been said on this, especially with some of what digitaldust said, though i myself have never received PM's like that.
although...i would like to say something from the others' point of view. when i first started on GFX i was all excited to see what fellow artists had to say about my work, if i could learn from them great, if all they had time for was to show appreciation for my work with a "hey cool," that's good too, at least i knew that people other than family and friends were seeing something they liked in my work. people hopefully of a like mind or at least with a more discerning eye. but comments were sparse, crits even rarer, and i'm not one to count votes, but if a vote count is the only way to know if people are liking my work or not, then i admit getting more votes makes me smile.

so anyway, being a newby, what did i do? tried posting a "if u have time check out my new post" in the saywhat, but that didn't really work, and i kinda got the impression that you shouldn't do it like that anyway. i tried giving honest and when able in-depth crits on other artists' works, that helped some, but usually you get comments from those returning the favor, which while much appreciated, felt like begging for crits anyway, and usually the really great artists (elite or not), the one's whose comments might be appreciated even more were the ones not in the habit of returning the favor.

so lots of times, posts go unnoticed, we all know that, and there've been lots of talk about this, and a lot of solutions offered, but still...sometimes can be pretty unsatisfying.

i guess what i'm taking a long time in getting to is that i can understand where these PM spammers are coming from. either they're new and don't know better, or they're just artists desperate for some feedback, some reaction, to their work. i mean that's why I joined GFX. though i've never PM spammed anyone, or at least so rudely or abruptly, i can't say i've never been tempted.

(i realize there are notorious spammers that don't necessarily fit in the above description but....)

Just a thought.

not look diferent the technique "I vote/comment for you, you vote/comment for me" i prefer PM spamming than the ppl add empty comments in all artworks.

Thanks for clarifying, Wyzzy. Y'see, that's the first I've heard you can't mass PM people - I figured that was what was being done.

I can't imagine having the kind of time it would take to send out separate PMs, even changing the wording up a little between them... ? Tenacious!

"But you don't know where my brain is... "
