Good books
GPEWETT | 09/25/2005 @884 | Edit edit post
Im farely new to the world of sketching and brand new to digital art. Ive read many Loomis books and the only problem i had with them was that they didnt include anything about digital coloring or doing everything digitally(obviously they were written a while back). What are some more good anatomy, proportion, digital art, character design books. List any and all PLEASE

What applies to art in general applies to digital medium. Period. There is nothing so miraculous or special about working digitally than makes it so radically different from oils or pencils - it is actually less challenging to work digitally, because the medium does not fight back. Technical things may be different. Principles of composition, color, perspective, anatomy, viewer involvement still apply and will continue to apply.

So look at new sources too, but stick to Loomis. :)

Yep, D'artiste rocks. I would also advise to get a book called "Leaonardo da Vinci on the Human Body'. I will check out later who is the publisher. :) Very cool book, has all his anatomical sketches.

I've seen a lot of anatomy books – own several, but always seem to come back to the same ones:

Anything by Loomis
Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist by Stephen Rogers Peck
The Human Figure by John H. Vanderpoel
Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm
How to Draw the Human Head – Techniques and Anatomy by Louise Gordon
Constuctive Anatomy by George B. Bridgman
How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema

And while a lot of Burne Hogarth is a bit over the top stylization-wise, he gives some really good information/visuals, especially if you are into fantasy or comic book art.

A good, comprehensive list: http://www.animwork.dk/Default.asp?ID=133

Nothing beats drawing from life!

Jack Hamm...I love his work

Burne Hogarth is ok, but he insists on drawing every ligament/tendon in his works...still...he's got the technique down.

Well, if you already have Loomis etc and are just looking for books that concentrate on *digital* painting, or whatever, I've seen this one which is quite nice. Has quite a bit on 2D painting.

Digital Fantasy Painting Workshop by Martin McKenna
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060724323/103-1247684-4681415?v=glance&n=283155&s=books&v=glance

D'Artiste is very nice, not sure if I can say the same about the Exposé books though ;) The images are nice but the way they printed it... blurgh.

Just received Loomis's "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" in the post today, from the US. Having a proper copy sure beats printing it off the web. Now maybe my figures will improve (and to answer the question, you can't get better than Loomis for ease of understanding and demonstration through real talent - the fact that you might want to paint digitally is irrelevant)

Hogarth, Loomis, Seegmiller (I can see all of them from where I am sitting right now - well at least their books..)
Just want to stress how good they are..I know everyone else already mentioned them :p

Pam - Shyam is good, but his style is much crisper and drier than Loomis's warm line, and he occasionally makes distortions that Loomis wouldn't let himself do, I think. :)

As for if he can make a "next" Loomis - who knows? Can he communicate his knowledge of drawing, painting, and illustration business in a clear form while talking not just of technique but of attitude? If he can, does he? Or will he in the future? We'll see. :)

As for recommended books - check my home page, I have a bunch of links to what I have personally tested and found useful here.

well.... I think shyam has it, it just rolls off his tongue ...except it rolls off his finger tips know what I am saying?
his can draw what he thinks or feels and sees in his head and then brings it to life.
to me thats a real artist
now to teach other people well thats another story he sketches none stop and I have begged him to make a tut of some kind and I think he's having a hard time...
I know he can do it he just needs a nudge and some help explaining how too
to make it more simple for others to understand

Anything by José María Parramón who is even better than Loomis in my opinion, his books are shorter but they touch issues that Loomis forget in perspective and anatomy. He's spanish but his work has been translated into many languages and is cheaper than many others, he and Loomis are the best choice for beginners in my opinion.
