Description

Good afternoon GFXers! This is my first submission in the month of May. I'll provide a brief story and some technical information to give you a bit of background.

As many of you know, I work for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. I was invited out to one of the project sites our company is working on called the Inland Feeder Arrowhead Tunnels. At this particular location, two tunnels are being bored through the San Bernardino Mountains to collect water from Lake Arrowhead and divert it to Diamond Valley Lake in the event that San Diego has a drought, they will be supplied water via secondary means. Anyhow, this image shows the TBM ($9M tunnel boring machine) breaking through the face of granite rock 22,000 feet through previously mined tunnel on the other side of 8,000'. The tunnel itself is 19' in diameter and when lined and complete will have a 16' diemeter pipe running through the middle! You could drive a large SUV through it, no trouble!

Needless to say, this project has been ongoing for the last 12 or so years, taken so long partially do to politics and money! If you want more details, feel free to PM me! I am very lucky to have witnessed this firsthand! It's not everyday this happens! Thanks for viewing!

To answer a question, the 19' diameter tunnel boring machine met the previously mined tunnel off by only 3". The alignment was performed via GPS! To be off 3" is quite accurate!

Best Regards,
Tommyguns

Very nice, well not nice as in a Portrait nice ;)

Could do with some dodging and burning to emphasize what is actually happening here. maybe darken the walls and get creative with the lamps lighting the scene and use them to point out the Cutting head thingy :)

But don't go back when the water is running ;)

Very cool, Tom. Before I read your description it took me a moment to figure out what I was looking at (this fact only makes the image more interesting). Anyway, excellent exposure and level of detail. +10

I'd think I'd pee my pants if I saw that coming to me. How loud is that sucker?

I think the framing elements is what makes me appreciate this more. The minimal text in the frame and the track lighting of the site really work well.

I can see what Brian means about some flatness, perhaps just darkening the edges a tad to give some life to the outer edges as there isn't much variation in tonality.

Brett:

That "sucker" makes the ground shake. You can't hear anyone or anything except for the monsterous rumbling! Good thing the machine only moves forward and at a snails crawl speed! We're talking on a good mining month, 24 hours a day, 800'! Most of the time, it's between 2-500' due to faults and bad ground, or replacing the screw auger!

I knew exactly what it was from the thumb, though I didn't believe it. A rare subject and opportunity.

An unusual and interesting subject. However I think the photo lacks something to really give it visual impact.
