Description

This is from my recent trip to the Chiricahua mountains in southeastern Arizona with a friend. A link to full version is added below.

The Black-tailed Rattlesnake is one of the most beautiful species of Arizona’s 17 species of rattlesnakes. With most species inhabiting the desert, it is the most common species in the forest habitat. Hiking in the mountains, it is hard to avoid them this time of the year.

You’d rarely see it first, but when you hear a cicada-like, short and gentle rattle, you’d know you almost stepped on one. Unlike diamondbacks – blacktails are fairly ‘tame’. They’ll get used to you in a short while, then they may sit quietly and pose for you.

This was the second one we saw in a small area within 20 minutes. After leaving the first snake, we bended to take pictures of a lizard. Then we heard the rattle just… under my friend's butt :). I let him freak out while I followed the snake that crawled and coiled under a bush, where it seemed cozy and happy.

I took this picture with the Tamron Macro lens to render as much detail as possible. I could do without the dry leaf in the front. I kept asking my friend to remove it, but he wouldn’t listen. .

Nicely composed. The aspect that made it work is how there are a few leaves nestled against the snakes body. This helps to bring the forest and the snake together more so then if no leaves were resting in this fashion.

I'd give my left arm for an opportunity to shoot (with my camera, of course) a beautiful creature like this in the wild. Excellent shot. +10

To me there's something very alluring about getting close enough to venomous snakes to photograph them. Non in RI unfortunately. Great photo. Sharp and clean with a nice sheen.

well done Eyal! love the lighting on the back and left-side of snake which really catches the scales--sometimes they can look velvety at close range!
don't know if I already told you, but I made a 10day trip down to the C. Mts staying at the SW Research Cntr....saw my very first rattlesnake there off trail- a black-tailed as well. very lucky for your friend these aren't so aggressive */9

Wonderful capture. Not creepy at all. We have rattlesnakes in Alberta so hopefully I'll get a chance to photograph one some day. I think I'd have cropped some off the top and placed the head on the 1/3 line.
