Description

This one actually just started as a sketch of the hand, but I got pretty carried away. I developed a concept around that pose of the hand, kind of casually holding something dangling from a cord.

From there I came up with the idea of this mysterious man (dressed nicely but with some hidden darkness (tatoo)), holding a key, who has come to release this world-ending monster.

For the monster, I wanted it's eyes to express both a menacing and dangerous quality, but also to seem interested and hopefull in this man's key and the prospect of being unleashed upon the world once more.

I'd love any comments and to hear whether or not the story got you. Thanks for looking everybody, hope you like it.

Great, great concept! The composition is perfect! And the hand+tatoo+key is awesome!
But I have 2 little crits: The skin of the beast (especially of the left) needs some texture or something like that. It's a bit too smudgy/smooth. My 2nd crit: I think the beast may look a bit meaner.
But besides that, it's a stunning piece of art, one of the best paintings i've seen here. The bg is also very nice.
Top marks!

I see what you're saying and I think that you definitely have a point. With regards to the skin, I wanted this guy to have a basically smooth and possibly semitranslucent exterior. I painted it with varying hues and saturations to try and achieve this along with some surface textural details like the scratches on his right arm and shoulder. Also, I wanted the metal of the lock and chains to really contrast with the skin as they were central to the concept.

As far as the meanness, I was trying to balance his expression somewhere between viciousness and hope, which is actually an extremely weird thing to try and pull off, come to think of it. Perhaps it would have been a bit more effective if I had leaned it more to the mean side, but I didn't want the monster to be regarding this guy, purely with savagery, but with a pair of conflicting emotions. Whoa, I think I'm getting too deep here!

Thanks for the crit! And THANKS for the votes

Great work. A little rust or some type of degradatoin on the key would make this a full point work. Right now the key just stands out a little to much for me.

I'm a big fan of work with a cinematic element, as I try to do the same in my paintings, so naturally this is going into my favorite works page.

While I understand your reasons for the smooth skin on the creature, the hand of the man seems kinda...plastic for some reason. Again, this does contrast the lock/chains but it seems kinda off.

Great angle, and again great concept...I can picture this as a living moment so easily....

Thanks for the comments. I'm not sure how I would make the hand seem more fleshy. I see what you mean though, could it be too shiny perhaps?

Great crit and thanks for the votes.

Great job here. I agree with the comments above, the creature could use some more textures, it will increase the quality of this great picture a lot! :)

:) Unique perspective
:) Good colour palette again
:) The hand is very well formed
:) Interesting beast design
:( I'd up the contrast on the hand, i.e. darken the areas where the fingers meet, and where the sleeve touches the skin, and (slightly) lighten the highlights where it faces the light. It seems a little washed out in terms of depth of tone.
:( The key and the lock are a little too perfect, and the key is again lacking contrast
:( The beast's right arm looks a little undefined and blurred. I find that blue veins can help skin look translucent, if that's the effect you were looking for.
:( The beast is a little too dark centrally. You've also highlighted his shoulder whereas I would have highlighted his head, which would have had the advantage of defining your second area of interest and also emphasising the beast's recessed eyes and facial... OK, I'm going to have to use this word... topology.

the only thing i don't like is the tattoo on the keyholder's arm, it makes him seem a little bit immature and takes away from the seriousness of the piece. this is very hardcore, very cool to think about. and the painting is absolutely amazing.

helloooooo whats thia mann
just awesome artwork :)

the composition is just very cool
building the picture centered on the hand and then working to the background to the monsters eyes :))

loved it :)
just one point though cant really make the creatures face
a bit more face would add to the look in the eyes..
but hey who am i to criticize huh
