Description

How do people in your country celebrate Halloween (All Hallows Eve)? I'd love to hear from members of all the countries represented on GFX.

This photo is only manipulated by the addition of my cat Raphael's eyes. Otherwise, this scene was set up in the dark using black matboard as a backdrop and base to reduce reflection.

Linked below is a photo of Raphael who kindly donated us his eyes for this fun little project.

In the USA it is customary for children to dress up as ghouls, ghosts, witches, clowns and also TV and movie heroes and villains. At dusk they go "Trick or Treating" which involves going from house to house and collecting candy from neighbors. Often adults will have Halloween parties ... drink too much and themselves become monsters.

Please share your stories.

Thanks,

Michelle

this is not good story at all drunk adults. drinking is bad for liver and may cause short term memory lose and many more things.

Great, festive image. Good job with the manipulation and lighting. I must admit that I'm one of the drunk adults ;)

Tekb: Lighten up a bit.

I do not claim to be a whiz at photo manip. This is just for fun and knowledge.

Good work with the lighting. It is a perfect halloween theme and I like the border and font. I think this could stand on its own as a photo without the eyes but they add a slightly different touch. I'm sure your cat would like its eyes back though.

Great image. You Americans really love this dont you?

Well I believe it started here in UK but we don't really take it that seriously (mind you in the last few years the kids have started going all american on us here with 'proms' and stuff and I have noticed halloween merchandise is swamping the shops these days)

Anyway happy Halloween (I sound stupid when I say that lol).

Thanks for commenting Andy. It's a big deal for kids. They love getting dressed up. Most of the costumes now are very commercialized. It is common to see Spiderman, The Grim Reaper, Batman, Freddy Kruger, and Darth Vader. Most adults simply do it for their children. Some years ago it became quite scary when some very bad people were lacing the candy with poisons and razor blades. Teens will often play mean pranks such as throwing eggs at houses, smashing pumpkins (Hey! That's a rock band!), and smearing soap on car windows. The police have become ever present on Halloween night in search of these pranksters.

Thanks again for your input Andy!

Nice image Michelle, really atmospheric and topical. It sounds funny but even though we don't make such a big deal out of Haloween here, I always make a pumpkin and put a candle in it and have done for years. I guess I like the creative element and the cosy light it gives off :) Nice work!

American tradition has always 'leaked' to and fro across the Atlantic since the days of the Pilgrim Fathers, but two of my favs (and incidentally only more recently) are the wonderful notion of 'Proms' and 'Halloween'. I've often so wished that we had had Proms in my time - what a way to finish kicking academic ass, huh? And those tuxes are very, very cool :p

Halloween takes our (somewhat politically serious) Guy Fawkes' night into the pure fun zone! The children in the school where I work have tremendous fun weeks ahead of the event, discussing and preparing their costumes, plans of action and without doubt, their wicked 'tricks' :p

LOL! God Bless USA!

Yeah Andy... it is sorta weird still talking about 'Halloween' as though it's been around here for ever :p

Thanks for the presentation and interesting topic Michelle. Best wishes and..... BOO!

Hey right Fretty, lil sis!

I reckon we dress Andy Jones up as a turkey (or is that Thanks Giving? Aint got that over here yet...) and have millions of shots taken from all angles of embarassment, then post them across the planet, as a gesture of good will... Nuthin to do with Halloween but what the heck, we can maybe tweak it a bit with a lil Voodoo or something later?

Oh yeah Michelle, I wanna apologise on behalf of Andy for his messin' up a perfectly good topic post. Baaaaad Andy!

My son can't wait for Halloween! I love it for many reasons as well, but the trick-or-treating is fun for me too...brings back great memories! And as far as the nimrods of the world with the malicious attitude...well, use your imagination for my comment! Oh, BTW...ya' mean we have to wait for halloween to be one of the drunk adults? Bah-Humbug!!! :p
Enjoy everyone...Happy Haloween!

Hey I love it (and Rachel is a really sweet cat) I see that you changed the text, this looks so much better I think

Infact, in sweden I don't think that many people celebrate halloween, I guess it is spreading some and there are a few kids that trick or treat but still fairly uncomon. Though we do watch the odd horror flick :)

Cute.

Well this is the United Kingdom, and I expect Hallowe'en to be the same thing as it is in the states. However, back where I come from, Halowe'en is NOt a holiday (despite the fact that some of us do try to ape western customs, but Hallowe'en is still not a holiday in Malaysia).

The Chinese do also have their own form of Hallowe'en, but it's less celebrated and less welcome. Because whereals the usual Hallowe'en goes on for 1 day, the Chinese dedicate 1 MONTH for the same purpose - being for the worship of the dead. As a general rule, many traditional Chinese dread the 7th Month and loathe even to discuss it at all on any other time of the year. Even many of my relatives still won't say "ghost" but something more like "hao xiongdi (good brothers)" for fear of offending any otherworldly beings during the 7th month.

Woha! Very cool! I like the lightning and the reflections of the candles! Raphael has very beautiful eyes

I guess we're slowly importing the halloween celebration in Norway. I don't think a lot of ppl make a big deal out of it. Sometimes I am, and it's usually so much fun! This year we're planning on having a party over at a friend's place. We're not very experienced, but we'll try to make it as fun as possible;) I'll try to carve my first pumpkin! Michelle, do you have any tips for fun halloween things? I'm an amateur;)

Nice photo, good Halloween feel. I live in the US so you know how Halloween goes... but with a service club in my high school, I used to go "Trick-or-Canning," where we asked for canned goods instead of (or in addition to ) candy, which we then donated to a battered women's shelter. Now that I'm in college, Halloween is just another excuse for a party and lends itself to people making fools of themselves even moreso than usual due to the fact that they are drunk and in silly costumes. :p

whatīs happen? we only can make positive posts? is that a free page or itīs a dictatorial sistem? it has this empty work and without creative interest that itīs only a repetiton of a topic should like to everybody? i said no. i think that you must accept ALL COMMENTS and assume that not all is perfect. please seriousness...

AbbERLINE...

Comments about work are always acceptable. Comments like, "You suck and your work sucks." Has no bearing on being anything but diminutive and insulting, lowering the professional standards this site is trying to upkeep, and as a result, won't be tolerated when put on display in a public matter.

If anyone wants to drop any sense of unprofessionalism, they can send it via PM. That's what the system is there for.

Nova or anyone else can post all they want about what they don't like, but if you want to just sum it up with "You Suck! and your work Sucks!", well that's about as helpful as saying "Great Job!" in trying to make any sort of change to an artist and their posting habits.

Offer a solution to create a better product....I have already explained this to Nova in a PM, and I encourage her and yourself to PM me if you wish to discuss this further....

'cool' and 'great work' in no way compare to 'you suck' and are not personal attacks.

I refer you to http://www.gfxartist.com/about/FAQ/37086/ for further explanation. Refer to #2.

If you have issues with those who leave such 'flowery' comments then PM them, do not take it out on the artist.

I've already noticed your new comment, I'm asking you nicely to put your energy into creating new artwork, or helping others grow. A flame war instigated in a member's artwork thread will not be tolerated.

This is the last time I will address this in public

well i am new on here, but WOW what a great pic, love the eyes and the overall thing is totally halloween or sawhain as we witches call it, and yes its been around forever in uk too, if you know any witches you will know its the celebration of our past ancestors and the love and knowledge they left to us, so go on enjoy ........oh and btw some of us do go ott over here i had four gravestones, a ghost and numerous witches this year plus huge cobwebs and pumpkins so i say ......... HAPPY SAWHAIN (HALLOWEEN) TO ALL ..
