Description

Did this a few weeks back, intending to use it for the CGTalk "Spectacular" challenge but decided not to. No refs, maybe 15hrs total, Painter 8.1. You can see the progress stages in my CGTalk thread, although I've forgotten the URL it's been so long. I'll post it when I remember.

It’s well-painted, but I just don’t get what the abominable snowman is doing in the jungle? :p

I enjoy the scenery the most actually – the colors are very well done, especially the yellows and oranges where the foliage appears to be burning.

I don’t find the composition terribly interesting, almost everything is directly in the center, which doesn’t help me move around the painting much. Also, the action takes up almost the entire frame – I feel like it could use some more room to breathe.

The sense of dynamics is well played; I especially like the addition of the dirt falling from the man’s boots. Nice work.

This is really nice, one of your better works Simon. The explorer blokes are great, especially the one in the forground, and as usual the backround is top notch. The only real weak point in my opinion is the albino himself, his anatomy doesn't look very convincing. The right arm looks too long, even for a gorilla type, and the big belly may just be a bit too big, but as this seems to be a fantasy creature it's forgiveable. I would have added some more stains, or perhaps some dirty browns onto his fur coat, to add character. The snake looks a bit...toy like.
Overall this is excellent work, very well done, amazing considering there was no referances.

This is like Boy's own stuff from a much more inosent yet action packed time! I am loving th edetail in the foliage! Great albino gorilla! Love it!

I'm not blind to technical issues like Juro pointed out, but sometimes I just don't care - because there is so much else that works. In this case - composition, light, colour, balanced detail, and an interesting story!

Ahh...such a wonderful painterly style....great saturation of color and wonderful depth to your works of art. Your representation of the human figure is very natural and inspiring. The only critique I can think of is....why is it so important that an artist finishes his/her art without a reference? During my schooling I was told that using references only makes you a better artist! Yet everyone here seems to prize the idea that they don't use references. Ok...last thing...I must say you are quite the gifted individual and I think your 6 preliminary sketches you did for the cgnetworks "Spectacular" challenge were some of the better uses of light and shadow to develop a composition. Your work is inspiring...

Great work!
The lighting is particularly excelent.
As someone already mentioned, the ape's anatomy is slightly.... weird, and the foreshortening of the old guy's left leg isn't really working. I think it's the angle of the shoe that throws it off.
Still, great piece!

Edit: Funny, how the old guy, while fleeing in terror, still has the presence of mind to secure his hat!

Astonishing! Everything is so detailed out…keep it up! Only one critic imo i.e the tummy of the animal is too solid n huge. I feel its taking away the flow of it…maybe if it would have sagged a bit, it could have added more appeal to it…overall my max though!

The painting is a bit sharp in the details, but I like it anyway. It's so much happening in it, and the people are so well painted! It looks realistic. You also seem to have done a good job with the surroundings. (thumbup)

Awesome work Baron! But ummm ... a pregnant snow monster in the jungle???

Really my only crit is his belly as was stated earlier. The other things are so minor. I would have not even noticed if I hadn't read the comments. I enjoy the fine details, great lighting effects, and beautiful colors.
The scene just comes alive!

i have to say, he has a big stomach ehehe. perhaps the only thing missing is a little blood on the guy lying, anyway this is really good.

Avatar Wysiwyg

 11/04/05 @538

everyone has it on the stomach issue...but seriously guys....you have already accepted the fact that there is a giant ape eating people....i think I can ignore the stomach ;)

I'm more amazed at the foliage, which you have always been good at....I watched this WIP at CGTalk and I'm glad you finished it.

I think it would be interesting if you had someone hanging off his right arm (as a failed attempt to control the ape)...to display the sense of powerlessness against the beast.

Thanks everybody for the crits / comments / votes so far. I am taking notice of what people say (honest). Interesting point about the composition - I only saw that it's true when I looked at it now. Because I don't plan composition it's kind of funny it ended up like that. Or not, depending on your point of view.

And the snake - yep, horrible. I had one like that when I was a kid, it was a draught excluder with beady plastic eyes.

Yes, his belly is too big, I left it like that cos fat monkeys are just great, no?

But no snow monsters here. Albino gorillas are real (as are albinos of any species) and they do live in jungles. The only liberty I took was with his his size... and the size of his belly of course.

Thanks again, and more welcome ;)

I like the way you painted the jungle, it comes out very well, great use of colors.
All attention goes to the albino gorilla and there's plenty to see around.
You painted a story and that's always great.

The painting is great overall, the belly is a bit disturbing and pregnant looking. The rifle the explorer in the foreground is carrying really did need some sort of referrence as it looks rather inoperable. Something in a nice British, Holland and Holland safari grade double rifle would do......
