Description

A quick painting, started off as a practice sketch. Done after watching LOTR, but it's not a scene from the film, I just made it up and stuck a Gandalf-type bloke at the front for a laugh. Painter 8.1.

Before I read your comment, I thought it reminded me of LOTR. Very well painted, I can't understand how you call this a 'quick' painting! :o Anyway, will there be a larger version available to view?

Scenery is your forte, this is really great, the figures and perspective are a tiny bit wrong. The figures are a bit too stunted and chunky, I think taller slimmer figures would add to this no end, and the perspective of the castle looks a bit toyish. Mountains, beast, mist, foreground all top class (thumbup) Excellent work over all.

I allways love the solidness of the paintings that you make. Espescially the ones with a strong lighting, like this one. Great work.

Thanks everyone for the comments / votes so far. Team member, GFXartist sponsor Juro - yep, the figures are wonky. I did them in about 20 minutes, but that's no excuse ;) Elite breathing2004 - you're right, the beast has a bandage round its leg with a bloodstain on. Difficult to see at this size. I have a larger version on my site ( http://www.painterly.co.uk ) in the Fantasy Gallery (I can't post the direct URL because they sometimes change). The original is about 4000px wide, as I recall.

you would make a fantastic concept artist in the film industry (if you aren't already) Great sense of panorama and epic storrytelling in your paintings.

I see nothing wrong in perspective and the castle is good as well IMO.

nice mountain colors, your work seems to suffer from.. somehow too crisp detailing. By that I mean for example the mountains, seems like every single crack of them is super deep and dark and that makes them look really chuncky. That's bit part of your overall style and it happens with everything, characters included. It makes everything like they're rough rock sculptures.

Put the details into important areas and don't make every shadow so dark.

Pretty detailed for quick painting! Result has very nice plasticity and colors - oh I wish it would be possible to get same results in such contrejour-lighting in the real life. Maybe with giant reflection board in the back. Maybe :)

+10 coz of the short time
only thing which should be improved is the lighting of the mountains...
i know you love to use hard contrasts but less hard shadows and some sort of light distance fog would give it abit more depth.
dude its time that someone hires you for doing this on a professional (aka paid) level :)

Uh.. say what? "A QUICK PAINTING" ????! Well, this information doesn't exactly do anything good for my artistic self confidence, my friend. Please tell me you're joking, eh? Anyway, this is a fantastic piece no matter how much (or little) time you spent on it. Mindblowing!
