Description
For whatever reason, I started thinking about 'Alice in Wonderland' last night and couldn't get the image of a turtle with wings out of my mind. As a result, I plopped down on the floor and started cranking out an image fitting of Lewis Carroll's wonderful little world. Except for one little detail... the Mock Turtle in Alice in Wonderland, I've come to discover after a brief stint of Googling, is a cow-turtle, not a winged turtle. Oh well. So, here it is. This is a pencil version, 2H mechanical on 9x12" Bristol, vellum finish. Approximately 3 hours of pencil scratchies to get this one accomplished.
With any luck, this will be a nice color piece later on....

Pros:The idea of combining a turtle with a bird is simply great!
Both animals are almost oppositional that's why the combination is so interesting. The textures on his face and details are cool too. Cons:Flaw of this work is in my opinion the composition and proportions.
The composition because it's just a character sketch. I'd love to see him in some kind of everyday pose (eating a fruit from a tree flying for example). The propotions because of his limbs (arms, legs). They are too big in my opinion. The contradiction would be stronger, if his legs were more like real turtle legs. Oh, and you should put some more effort in the shading. Perhaps try using the flat side of the pencil for smoother shades. Overall opinion/feedback:The con section seems big, but I really like this work.
In fact I'd like to see this character evolving a bit more. It seems like the first stage to me. That's why he still looks a little stiff. I'm addicted to the whole Alice storyline and this character would fit well. It's a unity of opposites. Hope I could help. Keep on rocking, man! |

loved the design and the lil details you have managed to put in this one
great
my only comment would be it looks a lil bit over humanized with the more slender arms compared to the bulky legs, but if thats what you wanted to achieve, to have a human turtle hybrid with wings thats cool by me
i loved it man
definetly +10

Daequitas: One of my biggest faults is that I apply my knowledge of human anatomy to most everything I do. It's a failing of mine to get stuck in a rut of drawing what I know. I can't help but instinctively think in terms of humanoid creatures. I'm trying, though! I'm adding more animal/creature pics to my body of work. Hopefully, I'll learn more in the process.
Valera: Of course he can fly! He pulls his arms in, draws about half his legs up, then tucks in the head. He's amazingly aerodynamic...for a turtle.
Dean: I don't think this is the last I'll work on this one. I plan on doing some more in Photoshop with the tablet. I'll be sure to take your comments into account! This was mostly a 'back to basics' pencil drawing to keep my chops up
Gianna: Thanks for the praise! I don't critique as often as I should, but I try to get some quality statements out there when I do. I agree that the head looks more like a garden snake than a turtle. I may tweak that a bit later. As for the 'wonky' border, I can't stand a straight border on some of my drawings (just depends on the subject matter), so I make weird direction changes and assymetrical boxes. Just a quirk of mine.
Thanks again for all the comments!

The Mock Turtle's companion is a Gryphon - it struck me immediately that you'd possibly subconsciously combined the two creatures giving the Turtle the Gryphon's wings. Whatever - your new Very Mock Turtle is a great figure and it does have a very 'Carrollesque' feel to it - not obviously threatening but at the same time, not entirely comfortable to be around.
