Description

Kind of self portrait. At least I hope I looklike this way in this angle

Photoshop CS + Wacom Graphire 2 tablet (A6)
Around 30-40 hours
No reference used

Yet another lesson for me to reach next painting level. Strange, this time it wasn't painful to paint without reference. I found there are only few principles which has to be respected and after understaning them it's quite easy to paint them. Somehow it gaves me an artistic freedom.

See bigger version. It isn't as nice as it shall be, but I went time pressured at the end of painting.

Critiques (even nitpicking) are welcome and appreciated.

EDIT: Little update of the suggested issues. (Thanks for help, people :) )

EDIT2 [MAY-29 2006]: repainted the character in according to suggestions. Thank you all for help!

Some anatomy issues here, his lower leg looks very short.

Good atmoshpere and detail.

You have a certain quality to your paintings that really defines your work. It's hard to put into words. It's like your artwork glows and has a "shininess" to it. This one is my favorite of yours. I'd like to see the elephants just a little more defined.

What, exactly is he standing on?

Very nice Robert.

The mood and lighting is wonderful.

The pose seems a bit stiff and unnatural.
Would have used a reference for this...a pose from the
back with this specific handling is difficult and a good ref
would make this an even better image IMO.
the left leg seems to dissapair into the ground?

So what is he (you:)) shooting?
Looks like elephants:p

amazing work! you have great talents!

wow.

only issue I saw was the leg thing. I think because the leaves you have painted are all flat so it looks like flat ground. and my eye looks for a kneeling back leg but there isnt one. try and make some leaves that change in their orientation. rising up and partially covering your leg....

hope that makes sense...

amazing work!

Very good work, great atmosphere and good choice of colours! Some more work on the fabric (it looks a bit plastic as it is now) and the pose would be great, it could be perfect! :)

Really nice as always Robert. I agree that the photographer has a wooden pose and some anotomical issues (e.g., the foreshortened upper arm), but you've really painted a stunning mood here. Really, really nice work!
