Description

This ruby throated hummingbird is probably the most difficult capture I've ever shot. Hope you like it.

Wow, I'm just amazed you were able to get this shot - can't imagine how much patience that must've took. It's incredible that there's still blurring of the wings at 1/2000sec. Great shot (thumbup)

You really outdone yourself this time John! Awsome shot! I would saturate the collors just a little more, but that's only me. Great shot!

Thank you all for the comments so far. A special thank you to Carlos and Mihai for their suggestions. Byonder: A Hummingbirds wings beat @ an average of 50-55 beats per second in a figure eight rotation. In order to get a shot with no blur at all you need a shutter speed of about 1/2500 sec. I'll probably post a collage in the future with the wings motionless as well as with a lot of blur.to them.

I personally use thumbtacks to pin the wings to the wall, but this works, too. ;)

Capturing hummingbirds is extremely difficult as their wings move so fast! Great job John! :)

Excellent capture! Personally, I'd just post the top photo, instead of both. I know how hard it is to capture these little guys. Also, I'd suggest fixing the yellow cast and correcting the black point using Photoshop Curves (or equivalent tool in whatever application you use). Again, congrats on the superb capture!

Avatar MsMichelleLynn

 05/27/06 @439

Very nice John. You've even managed to bring out the reflective red in this male's throat. The lighting must be just right for this. I'm not crazy about the portrait crop. I think a landscape format would work better with more room to either side of the Hummingbird and also above. I would imagine that you had little choice in the cropping of this as you must have been in pretty close.

Nice job!

Michelle
