Description

This was inspired by...well take your pick! The Matrix, The Bourne Identity, Kill Bill, X-Men, Lara Croft, Highlander, Terminator 3, Underworld...all manner of films with women in tight leather!

Anyway I settled on Highlander in the end, although it went through different stages when she had guns, normal eyes and pearlescant eyes.

Ref used for the pose.
Done in photoshop

I will link to a larger version as I had to crop this a lot width ways and it still lacks the detail of the original.Plus you can't tell on this but she is in a corridor...that is more obvious in the original too as its much wider.

Yay, now thats out the way I can try this dragon contest.1

Cheers

Nice going Andy(thumbup)
strong piece.

There are some minor things
that could be improved IMO.

Her forehead looks a bit too square,
you might round it off bit more with some soft shadows.
Her bellyholethingie (sorry dont know name in
proper english) is placed bit too high.:p

What I really like is the lighting, and overall
badassnes of her character.

Excellent + 9

You should design clothes too ! ...only one tiny thing ..I dont like the blood dripping off the head ..with such volume, but I dont really know what decapatated head-blood looks like , so o.o .. the whole character is very well done ..and has tons of personality oozing off of her ..you really get the feeling she's walking towards you..she's absolutly delicious..

Avatar Andy--Jones

 05/21/06 @118

Thanks Vincent! I agree about her forehead and will probably amend that tomorow! Oh and its navel or bellybutton hahaha

Raescheeeil thanks a lot. I too have not seen a newly decapitated head but you maybe right...at least I think it may be too thick.

Great work Andy. You are very good at portraying body structure.

Avatar Andy--Jones

 05/21/06 @131

thanks Gary very much. I used a photo ref for her body but exagerated her legs a bit and her chest and muscles ever so slightly. I still dont think I am as good as I could be and need to do lots more anatomy studies.

 05/21/06 @141

Great Work, I really dig your style.. Nice use of lighting aswell.

Avatar slickgreekgeo

 05/21/06 @142

Great work, although it could use a bit more detail here and there, specifically her face. +8/10

Avatar Andy--Jones

 05/21/06 @149

Thank you very much Halcyonic.

slickgreekgeo. I do think her face is a bit too smooth and could use more lines. As I said though its lost loads of detail due to downscaling...eyelashes, lip detail, eyebrow hair etc are lost in this version...I will post close ups. Much appreciated :)

 05/21/06 @156

That's why it's always important to get the *right* gift...

Cool work. You're definitely improving in making your characters look more natural. A lot of people, even with references manage to make their characters look stiff and awkward. So, props for that. I think she'd look cool with long flowing hair, although it'd probably be impractical for a ninja-assassin girl. Keep it up!

pretty cool Andy. I agree with Wallace....her face is something else I think could use some work... (thumbup) +8

Avatar Gianna23

 05/21/06 @164

You have really captured the degree of pisstivity in her face! that hers top marks. I am just a little unsure of the streaky texture on the pants. Its painterly, where everything else is ultra smooth. Also some of the blood at the bottom of the drips looks a little smudgy instead of like its just dripping.

You did an awsome job on the perspective on that poor guy in the background! and I agree with the second poster...she looks "delicious" ;)
+9

PS Your style and talent with digital media is really cacthing up to your analog skillz

Avatar Andy--Jones

 05/21/06 @168

Gianna please dont say the word 'Painterly' in my presence!!!! It is blasphemous and irritates the hell out of me.

lol

Thank you very much I agree it needs a lot of work on it! :)

NICE WORK Andy (thumbup) sweet babe and lovely colourscheme !
that dead head could be more expressive...looks like he died in peace :|
and those blood drops needs more defination, just my opinion

but overall, GREAT EFFORT(thumbup)

psst i'd love to see more painterly works from u :p

One of our best in my opinion, at least one of your coolest! :)
Straight too favourites!
Maybe opening the eyes and mouth on the dead head there would give
better effect of fear? I don’t know.
Anyway, awesome work Andy! :)

Cool, really :) Good pose and expression.

BUT STOP USING GREYS IN YOUR SHADES!!!! Damnit man, honour the legacy of arenhaus. :p

Avatar Kaduflyer

 05/21/06 @635

This is a very strong piece...my fav from you so far.

Definately lose the dripping blood, it's totally OTT and looks a little comical in an otherwise serious piece.

This next is not a crit...merely one of my many, many soapboxes:

When a human head is severed there is rarely any neck left hanging...the spine normally shatters where it attatches to the skull...it's weakest point...and any remaining flesh and muscle rolls up under the chin as the tension it's normally under (and what gives it it's shape) is released....If you ever need examples I can mail them to you...er?...that's photo's BTW not real heads!!

Avatar Juro

 05/21/06 @684

I like what you did with the fade on the backround, the character has a very nice natural look also. A bit too much grey and airbrushing here and there but overall nice work Andrew :)

Avatar Andy--Jones

 05/21/06 @686

Wow bloody hell thanks everyone.

A-H I never caught what you said!!!!

Arne thanks, I know what you mean, I will deffo try not to have any greys in the next one lol

kaduflyer I was of the opinion after it was dont that the head didnt look realistic and the blood is OTT. I would deffo appreciate some references! I should have come to you in the first place, what with you being the horror dude on here!

Shyam! What did I say about that word 'Painterly'? I wont tell you again!!! ;-)

Everyone else thank you very much for taking the time to comment.

Avatar Thorsten

 05/21/06 @745

Hey, I knew the artist before I looked for the name. :)

The foggy light effect is nice, but you should put the darker zones there, where there is something that can cast shadows.

And the blood dropping from the head looks completely weird.

Great picture.

Avatar coladelight

 05/21/06 @808

Although the action is over, my head is filled with what actually took place before the beheading...really creepy but great job Andy.
I don't know anything or seen an actual decapitated head but this one looks more like a manequin's head and most suggestions are already mentioned...
so...how about that breast feeding issue? LOL

 05/22/06 @062

Once again, no review from me, because it's unnecessary. This is your best yet in my opinion. Your work with lighting and volume here is subtle and natural. Her pose is nearly dead on, and her expression gives me chills. The only meaningful crit I have to offer is that the blood running out of the head seems a bit too thick, but no big deal. Excellent work! +10

Avatar Andy--Jones

 05/22/06 @065

 05/22/06 @623

well andy,
i really liked the well balanced walk of the heroine
and loved the detail on the hand thats holding the head
great piece all together and my only lil crit is the light source
its a bit distracting placed between the head and the handle of the sword :(
it attracts too much attention away from the piece

+9/10 man
keep them rolling

Avatar Gods-Mistake

 05/23/06 @052

Wow! Great!
You said that you think her face is too smooth, but I don't think so. In fact it's the part I like the most. The killerlook in her face is pure evil and even her accentuated cheeks somehow suggest me that she's a cold-blooded murderer.
Excellent! :)

Avatar Andy--Jones

slaphapy5

 05/24/06 @082

excelent on the majority andy :)

only problem I really have is the head she's carrying... more directly the blood coming from it...

unfortunately I dont really have any tips of what to make it look like... : but it doesnt really fit the rest of the piece to me...

I love the ground texturing and the perspective is for the most part spot on. only one possible error I see on this... and thats the dead mans arm... it looks like its coming out of his foot... I think maybe its extended too far from the torso?

other than that I really dig it....

great stuff as always...

Again, strong concept! Great movement, perspective, expression. And she's really dangerous looking.
Agree about the "grey shading", besides that this is really great!

 05/25/06 @860

Neutral grey is my favourite colour!

Avatar DreamShadow

 05/25/06 @891

she's coool i like the belt and the cut on her left shoulder :) maybe a background would improve the whole atmosphere, dunno, just my tastes ...but still...it looks great :p hehe, and yeah, i thought she looks like lara croft a little

Avatar Andy--Jones

 05/25/06 @924

thanks Dreamshadow! Lara croft! Yeah I can see it although it wasnt intentional! Better than her looking like Bette Midler though isnt it? :)

Avatar metapuppet

 05/26/06 @967

uhh impressice progress andy
love it except of three things:
the head (imo it makes the idea a little too obvious), the glare (blocking it by the swords and her body made it a little more symbolic, too), and the textures on the light and floor (seem a little too clean imo)

but especially the smooth pose plus the expression rock(thumbup)!!

Avatar Andy--Jones

 05/26/06 @969

thanks metapuppet!

The more I look at this the more I don't like it now lmao. Oh well on to the next one.

Avatar trangle

 06/01/06 @978

Thanks to the random top artwork leads me to this painting...this is cool man and all have been said; but I see her sword wasn't sharp enough that's why the skin around his neck is teared up. I guess it took her took a long time to cut him up; it must be painful for him, but his dead face looks like he's sleeping. This is not a technical crit, because I don't know what your intentions are, but it gives me very strange feelings.

Avatar Andy--Jones

 06/01/06 @105

hahahaha trangle that is good enough fro me! if you feel strange that is cool :) Thanks for the crit. And yes I reckon it took about 5 or 6 chops to get that head off.

Avatar bakatron

 06/05/06 @452

the pose is terrific - its coming right at you - the issues im having is that youre applying thick strokes where there shouldnt be (the pants). i dont think your playing around with those brush types too much because you can have a kickass time with them.

cgmonkey at work has made a ton of custom brushes for ps that we all use for work - although we avoid the soft ones for various reasons since they dont suit what we do.. try a bit of liquifier as well. all fun fun. its just an issue i have
