Description

Type: Photomanipulation & Digital Painting
Software: Photoshop CS2, Mouse (No Wacom) :(
Time taken for completion: 1 month + 1 week

Leviathan & Esednahea took me a whole month and one week to complete. This artpiece has been the most challenging piece I've ever done because I wanted to try something new. With this artpiece I was really focused on details and spent days working on one single detail and until I had accomplished what wanted with one, I would pass on to the next. At first it was meant to be 100% photomanipulation but I told myself, no! lets try digital painting too. So I mixed them both. What I can say is that this piece is more than 50% digital painting. I challenged myself to do this and I feel like I have accomplished exactly what I wanted and I feel very proud with the final result.

Before I started
At first I had a complete different idea for this piece but while I worked on it, new ideas came to me and I started discarting the old ones. At first she was inside a temple, a ruin...surrounded by waterfalls, the only thing you could see from the dragon was the eye, which was lurking through a big whole on a wall. Since I wanted a big focus on the dragon, I removed the temple/walls. I wanted this piece not to be a 100% manipulation as I said but digital painting too. So I went for it, and decided to paint the whole dragon, well in this case, the head. I ended up not not only painting the dragon but various parts of this artpiece as well.

The Characters
Leviathan - The most difficult part in the making of this piece was definitely the dragon. Honestly, I never thought it would take me so much time to paint the scales/skin of the dragon. Because I wanted the dragon to look somewhat realistic I spent more than 2 days trying to achieve that.
First I had a very cartoonish looking dragon. Then the color tone of its skin became a problem but after mixing and bringing colors from the background onto the dragon, I finally managed to get what I wanted. I painted the dragon directly on photoshop, there was not sketching nor scanning in the making of it. I did look at many pictures of dragons for reference though.
Esednahea - The original picture went through an extreme reconstruction. The original stock photo was not big enough to fit the size of the piece but since it was the exact pose I needed I decided to fix it. She was one of the parts of the piece that took a lot of time to do. Her hair...her hair was a BIG issue! I played around with her hair so many times. She had this strange hair do, giving her a look like Princess Lea from Star Wars but then I realized that since it was raining her hair had to be messed up and look wet so I went by the long wet hair and I really really like it.

:) The woman is well-painted and well-coloured / shaded
:) I like the rocks too
:) The mist on the water gives a good feeling of depth
:) You've got most of the textures spot on
:( Even before I read your description, I knew you'd done your details section-by-section. You haven't taken time out to look at the bigger picture ( pardon the pun ) and therefore the overall lighting is off (way off in some parts). The dragon is lit from in-front and underneath, the tree from the right, the woman diffuse (which is correct).
:( Regardless of the work you put into the dragon, this piece would look 100% better without it. It's flat, because of the lighting, and its sheer scale makes it seem out of place.

nice work and it's easy to see that you're very talented, especially from the dragon details. i would love to see a complete painting from you one day. then the issues with lightning that BI mentioned would probably not be there at all, because you'd have your own material to work with and wouldn't have to adjust anything to fit in the painting, which i think must be the reason the lightning's a off.
and by the way, thank you for the nice comment x)

Very good work but I think that it would look much better without the dragon. The textures and composition are nice, good colours :)
The lighting is not the same everywhere though.

Nice work! Only crits are that it looks a bit too digital to my tastes and somehow the anatomy of the dragon's head bothers me a little. By "too digital" I mean that I can notice some repeating (as in duplicated) elements like the leaves of the tree or a few of those plants on the ground near the tree. Also, the rain looks a bit artificial. However, these are just little details and I guess it's just a matter of style.

I like how you got the feeling of rain there, the gray hazy atmosphere. The colors really fit the rain. Somehow the pic has this kind of quiet mood in it which I like too. I think the female figure is masterfully done! Can't see anything wrong with her. Maybe the area around the nipples could be showing a little or you could have hidden the breasts a bit more, but otherwise she looks good.

Impressive work with just a mouse! And welcome to GFX :) +6/7

first of all i'd like to take you as example on making a description...;) (thumbup)
afterwards...i see it required a lot of patience:)
baronImpossible pointed out some issues
what i can add is that the rain looks too much like a cloned pattern
he panites look copy/pasted...they have no real link to the body...so some more shading and merging
also, i would have liked those vines to look more random:)
the rest is ok...beautiful model;)
keep postin;)

Wow what an piece to start off your stay here! I'm impressed not only with the technichal qualities (i.e. details) but with the amount of patience you had to actually go through with it! I do however, have to agree with BaronImpossible, there is something quite off with the dragon. Another version you might consider is just placing the eye of the dragon in the background rather than the entire dragon's head (like your original concept). +7/7

Avatar landeroc

 06/04/06 @166

Yes. I actually there is another version where you can only see the dragon's eye lurking throught a hole on a wall. Honestly, when it was done, I removed the layer of the dragons head, and I did like it but I didn't felt like throwing away all the hard work to the trash. Also, when I did, it looked very simple. So it has its pros and cons. (is that the way you say it?)
I appreciate everyone's comments and critics. I'm happy with all the feedback I've gotten so far. Thank you all very much! :)

Very nice work here. It's almost perfect, but I agree with some of the crits regarding the lighting of the dragon; he looks a bit flat in spots, particularly along the top of his snout. Beyond that, exellent piece.
