Description

it's been awhile since I posted anything, Happy to post something new. People haeve asked me where I get my inspiration from and how I draw, I posted some of my proces as I went this time to give you an idea, as for the ideas, media mostly. I am working on a series right now so things will seem a little similar at times characters will repeat and make appearances, while Telus commercials seem to inspire the latest animals I chose. This is more realistic than my normal posts, but still improvised.

Amoeba did another wonderful painting, its well worth seeing she is by far the most amazing person I know. In the Garden of Far Far away by  amoeba

Your work reminds me of an Ansel Adams exhibit I went to awhile back. Each piece was innovative and a wonder to look at individually. But when I got there to the gallery (with the works presented together) every work begain to look the same and became boring.

I think it's time you push yourself out of your comfort zone. I'm not saying do what everyone else does, but take your particular style of stroke and try something different. Perhaps a new angle or some dynamic perspective. More obvious directional lighting/contrast. Or maybe a sense of speed/motion. Try adding an emotional aura rather than just a portait shot of a scene. You could still produce the same subjects even, just present them in another manner.

Don't let the endless 'oohs' and 'ahhs' of GFX distract your from search of continuous growth. What you do is good, but can be alot better, and I think you have the ability to pull it off if you try.

Guess I forgot to put some positves in there ;)

  • Good use of line weight
  • Good attention to detail
  • Every object/subject seems to belong, and not placed randomly
  • Good use of atmospheric perspective

The koalas face is great , the whole picture seems very balanced ..just natural to look at the only thing that bothers me a little is the area where the arm and chest overlap it look like the arm line is , errr, tugging the chest along with it as it reaches for somthing. But it could look like that anyways , i havent really looked at a koala on a tree for a while..o.o Anyways .. you did well

good choice of composition:)
as always, nice characters
but i have to agree with Brett...try something new as this subject is imo a bit too exploited already
dont get me wrong, i love your sketchy style but sooner or later people will get bored;)
you should follow Brett's suggestions...all i can add is more attention and patience on shading...don't just give it an overall tone...give it volumes through a more softer shading and tonal varioation on the same shape...try and soften your lines and crosshatching more;)

Beautiful work Aaron!....your skills with the pencil are great!!
Good luck with the nominations!

And all the contrary to WysiWyg I never find Ansel Adams boring!
After 30 years I still look at his books to remind me what a Beautiful black and white should look .

This is one of my favorite of you drawings. I really like the koala's expression and how the focus is drawn to that by the directional fur pattern and contrasty dark nose.

It's also one of the most polished drawings in your gallery. The line quility is definitely better in this one. It reads very well.

To represent a more realistic, natural depth you would probably have to use a lighter tone for the background elements. However I quite like the way it looks now. Somehow the flatness feels purposefully designed, and makes the image look very stylish, like a modern twist for the organic lines. The composition just flows. It's very nice :)

I am no artist Aaron, but to me the image is from just above the little guys fluffy ears..
He looks like my Uncle Albert !
The rest complicates the image for me !
But as I said painting and drawing is not my field.. my field is the one with the cows in it !!!
Good image.

"Don't let the endless 'oohs' and 'ahhs' of GFX distract your from search of continuous growth. (...) and I think you have the ability to pull it off if you try."
Agree with Wysiwig :)

Still, I like this one because of it's wholeness. It's looks massive and solid.
The playfull shapes like the girl's big feet, make it a joyfull piece. It's a well balanced image and you've put nice detail in the trees and the koala. I kinda agree the koala's arm look a little weird where it touches the chest.

Nice you post the additionals. They show your talent and the way you work; no way I can draw a detailed koala face like that in 5/30 minutes.

I love how textural this is and the fusion of extreme stylization with more realistic rendering in the koala's face. Oh, and I too would LOVE to see another collab with amoeba; the last one was fab. :]

I have a bit different opinion about this looking the same as your usual one. Actually this one is different. Just with one look, your characters are developing to have their own sense of identity since they are not clumped together. Your main character is in the background instead of being the one in the centre and seems to be wanting constant physical closeness like it used to. Perhaps a hint of your subconscious/inner-self trying to break free and be independent?
Just needs a bit of adventure (but you already know that ) and the emotion was already mention.
Keep it up Aaron!

Excellent expressive face on the koala. I like how the right ear breaks up and starts a flow throught your drawing. This is a very cohesive composition. I love looking at all the various elements, and seeing how they all belong. It is a nice contrast to draw the koala in a bit more realistic style in contrast to the rest of the drawing, and you have just the right balance between the two styles. This is a pleasure to view and has some light humor that is a wonderful addition.

As far as WYSIWYG's comments go, they apply to every artist. It isn't always easy, but how will we ever know if we can do something without trying. Even starting in small steps that may not be noticeable to all is worth the effort. It doesn't mean one has to change styles, but to expand on it, give it an evolutionary process. And evolution takes time, so don't become discouraged or impatient.

Beautiful work, Aaron.

Art is subjective and the details are in the eyes of the beholder. What may look unfinished to one, looks phenomenal to another.

I believe that WYSIWYG's comments are unfair both to you and your talent.

I am also quite sure that back in the day, Picasso got the same sort of critiques from couch critics who have no business critiquing because their work is also subject to the eye of the beholder. ;)

You are doing just fine. Let your imagination flow. I look forward to seeing more of your work. I have a feeling that you will go far with it.

I'm viewing backwards so I've just seen your next work... in comparison this one lacks a feeling of depth, everythings on the same plane and it's difficult to pick out a real focus - all the elements seem to be fighting for attention. That's really just an observation, it may be that's exactly what you were aiming for.. it's from a photog's view of the world and we tend to be a bit more literal!
I love the style of your pencil work, just don't know the technicalities to comment on it.
