Description
I wanted to convey the calm, smoky (incense & candles) atmosphere of the temple. You'll have to trust me that the full version is much better than the scaled-down version. There's at least 5 hours of details on the puppies that isn't showing up here.Technicals
Photoshop CS2
10-16 hours
Wacom Intuos2
No reference (mostly from memory, I have a few buddha statuettes at home and have seen my share of stray puppies...)
Background
The contrast here is the grand, golden Buddha and two tiny puppies - street dogs allowed to roam free at the temple.
The Buddha is in the 'Overcoming Evil' pose, which is also the name of this piece. In this case, the temple is a sanctuary, and the statue looks down upon a curious puppy whose life will be easier now that he (and his sibling) has found a place at the foot of heaven.
Here it is on DA (incase my image isn't showing up)

I just think Buddahs nose has become a tad too sharp, because of the highlight on it. He can cut carrots with that. Okok, a bit absurd, but you know what I mean, dont you?
Oh yeah and I think some more shadows over his cheeks could make it more realistic. Look at this example for example.
But hey, it got a really calming feeling to it and I love it for that!

what i don't think works (in my opinion) is how the light seems to be coming from the candle in the middle and then it seems (from the shadow cast by the statue itself) that the light is coming from the right. I would have put shadows on both sides of the statue giving it a more contrasting feel. dunno.
