Description

This is a collaborative piece drawn by Alberto Ruiz and painted by me, Bobby Chiu. (I've waited MONTHS to write that sentence!)

Now, you might be thinking that Mayan and Japanese are worlds apart. Believe me, I thought so too at first, but then decided that "Ancient Japan Sketches" needn't be taken so literally. The Japanese elements were present, so we included her. I wouldn't want to tell this Mayan samurai woman that she's not getting into the book, would you?

I've been a fan of Alberto's for a while now. I've always admired his unique "Alberto Ruiz style" of designing women. And at the 2006 Toronto Fan Expo, I had the opportunity to tell him this in person. Ironically, he came over to our booth before I had a chance to find HIM. He introduced himself and said he was a fan of our work! This just goes to show: the internet is an incredible networking tool.

I wasted no time in asking him to be a guest artist for this book. Then he came up with the idea for a collaborative piece, and just like that, "Mayan Samurai" was born.

Kick A** Style!
The muscle, the sword, and the blood stains looks very nice!
but only a little thingy, her left leg looks much more better than her right.

The style and painting is great!
The legs are stretching the imagination on how strangely out of line anatomy can be before it becomes unnerving. I haven't decided on how I feel about it just yet.
Great execution on the arms and tattoo.

The exaggerated anatomy/muscle work is on the brick of being disturbing:)
Technically well excecuted, great details.
I think the steel of the blade is not entirely convincing.
Overall, an excellent piece, you have real flair for making flamboyant characters

Apart from the rather hard angle of her upper muscle on her right leg this is effin brill. Love the exaggerated anatomy...agree with Wallace that you have just about come within the limits of it being too far! It works though.

Wicked!!!

It's very good. I like it a lot. I miss something in the shoes (leather straps? or something so, though it's only my personal opinion, it looks great anyway). I'd like to see some parts in detail (like the body or the hair ). All my points. :)

Wonderful!! I *love* seeing different body shapes represented. This actually looks like a woman who could carry a sword like that - might even know how to use it. :) I agree with the comments about the muscle being just a tad angular in spots, but still very cool.

I love the style, as you said it is very uinique to him. The concept isn't that appealing to me and that doesn't look like a katana.

The colors and everything is great

Wow! Her Legs are a little bit ... ouch... But the Rest is fantastic! I love the Idea, your Stile and the realisation!

Cool concept, somehow you have made the stylised anatomy make sense. Good painting.
