Description

Photoshop, approx one evening. I see flaws eveywhere but I figured I'd just share it so it wouldn't end up being another painting i cant ever get satisfied with, and eventually I'll forget it and lose it somewhere among all junk on my comp :p Comments and critique is much appreciated!

Absolutely gorgeous! Your best to date in my opinion. I love the birch tree bark (did I get the tree right?)

Sooo pretty! I just love her red dress and the leaves falling from the trees. There's so much life around her, yet she looks peaceful.
It looks a bit burned in some places (face, hands), but I'm not sure if it's just my monitors fault. :p
Anyway it's great, I'd put it on fav artworks if I could.

The trick is to understand why you aren't satisfied with it? Do you know? Share it with us :)
My crit would be the imbalance of lighting and tone of the subject versus the background setting. If this is your dissatisfaction with this image, then please give it a shot. Because this should be rather easy to change with colouring and changing levels in Photoshop, given that the subject and the background/tree are in separate layers.
Btw, I do like the concept of the image. In a way it suggests something is happening. And the drapery is fantastic!

Great work :) ... you really worked that material...I love it +8

williamli: I believe the flaws are mainly in where I diverted from the original thought...then again, I guess we always end up painting what we need to paint. Some rest would be niice. :)
I adjusted the levels slightly after finishing the piece because i liked the surreal feel it got from it. The whole piece is mainly just one layer and was mostly painted in one layer. It's no biggy so I didn't mind screwing up by painting in just one layer...which is cool to do, cause then you're really forced to face your weaknesses when painting. I've sure learnt a lot from it! Was awesome painting. :)

This looks very aerial!
I like the skin, the red dress and the leaves very much. The only thing that i see is not perfect, is her right hand. It looks like a big distance from the wrist to her fingers. Everything else looks great!

The flow of the dress, the rich colour, and the way that it’s dramatically draped reminds me of the pre-Raphaelite images (Burne-Jones, Rossetti), while the solid blue background seems to echo the ‘ancients’ - Greek? Out of my depth historically now – I just feel a blending of style and culture somewhere.
A lot of your figures have this stylised, iconic feel – I like the implied theatrical symbolism in them. This is a really beautiful piece.

Thanks for all comments and for totally making my day!
Phill - I adore many of the pre-raphaelites, i'm very happy to hear that, even though i did not have it or them on my mind while i painted it. Awesome :)

The color scheme and overall expression of the girl is much adorable.

Her hands are well rendered, but too large for her body/ face, and the fabric doesn't look correct either when it comes in front of her body.

Maybe you can correct these flaws if you take another look at your
references
to see how it should be done correctly.

I just love it! The red colors is so intensive.

Avatar Repercutir

 12/14/06 @728

nightbird - the model has big hands, and there's no reference for the fabric. The thought was to let it flow off the body and not let the body show thro the fabric. Thanks for the constructive critique!

Bhavesh - pm'ed you..

What a bizar beautiful work! There's flow and movement everywhere, although a tiny bit of motion blur on some of the leaves might enhance them. A beauty!

Andy said it all with: "Gorgeous"! There's nothing to add about that picture.

But a hint:
"cause then you're really forced to face your weaknesses when painting. I've sure learnt a lot from it!"

Take it to the next stage and delete the "undo" shortcut! No strg+z! Use your mistakes! Just for the HELL OF IT!

Concept:

Very strong

Technical Skill:

Average

Impact/impression:

Very strong
Pros:
  • the girls face is pretty lovely
  • idea and composition/ position of the figure are great
  • lovely setting
Cons:
  • the fabrics are looking too artificial
  • her right hand doesn't seem to be that correct in anatomy
  • the sky looks a bit empty, and so the tree may seem rather flat
Overall opinion/feedback:
I think its a lovely piece overall and you improved a lot.
