Description
The swamp witch collects fairies for fun and keeps them on a little piece of rope around her neck. But fairies are not always an easy catch…Could have increased the details of the owl and perhaps should have introduced a large number of bats in the background……. All done in Photoshop.

That takes nothing away from the rest though as i think it is a stunning piece!

Like Andy said i think her raised right arm is a bit off
I thinkt looks like the arm is going to the back,
looking at the muscle definitions, but her hand is
pointing towards the viewer.
Anywy, the details and colours are fantastic
this is an elite piece + 10

I think the owl is awesome, but It's doesn't look like it's flying, in movement, maybe you could add some motion blur, nothing too artificial though.
I really like her hair and the way she's clad. Gorgeous face too.

I love it
Emile you are fantastic

I think the picture will look better if the hair on her face was more real looking....less smudge brush!
You are very skilled artist without doubt but sometimes I get disappointed when your skill is not there in certain part even though you can do so much better that is all.
Thanks for sharing.

I had some trouble with the composition and the left arm.
I’ve been painting for a year now after a very long period (20 jr) of creative inactivity. I guess until now I’ve been focussing too much on painting technique and too little on composition (among other things.)
Maybe it’s better to split up this painting into two separate ones.
Anyway it was worthwhile exercise and I hope to incorporate all of the newly gained insights in my next painting.
Btw, Rafsan, You’re a funny guy. I’ll take it as a compliment

A few nitpicks though, the composition is kinda odd, because the interaction between the two main objects - the owl and the witch is, well, not there. The owl is happily going on its own business, and the witch is staring at the viewer, and other than the swirly magicky thingies, it's hard to tell that they're related at all. The body language of the witch doesn't help much, as while the whispy stuff suggests that she is in some way controlling the owl, the confusion over what exactly is going on with her arm/hand along with that part of her body being drawn back make it kind of ambiguous. It would perhaps be clearer if her body was rotated the other way round, with the shoulder closest to the owl going forth rather than back (comparably to a person pushing or tossing something like a ball).
And, secondly, wtf is up with the smudge brush?
I realise that a large portion of what is said here can't be applied to this picture at this stage (nor would you necessarily want to change it anyways), just stuff for future consideration. ^^

No it isn’t a Photo manip (look @ my other work..)True I went a bit crazy on some details and some, like the dress I messed up a bit trying to get some depth effect. The hair was one of the last parts that that I worked on and after so many weeks staring at this painting I became really bored with it ( and perhaps therefore didn’t see the many mistakes in composition and all that.) and so the smudgy part didn’t bother me much ( actually it still doesn’t..) But your right about inconsistency, I guess I experiment way too much…have to change that.
I used a ref for the owl, the hand of the witch and “only the crisscross string part” of her armour was inspired by a picture of toy suit I accidentally came across

Not to take it all down, I think the palette and the originality of figures is good.

Thanks for your comments. I don’t want to repeat myself about what this painting(!) is. But when you experiment with PS you can get some very unexpected results bij duplicating layers and using different blending modes which alters the thing you’ve just painted completely and I sometime want to see how far you can go in realism.( In fact it turns me on
The staff for example is just a compostion of one painted part, duplicated a few times and positioning them to form the top part of the staff. Then use some dodge and burn, maybe add a screen layer and hey it looks like metal. Nice or not but it sure looks like metal to me. And something like that was done with her armour too. Further more I worked out each part separately that’s not a very good way to a chive a consistent look. And true there are a few issue’s with the whole composition.
And hey!! it wasn’t a commissioned piece, it’s just me!!
learning to master ps and painter and therefore trying to get some useful feedback from a place like this.
Thanks

But why should an artist be so skilled that he can paint perfect arms and hands like this, but forget to paint the hands in the correct size and proportions?
There are other parts of this painting which make it look weird and like something puzzeled, too.
The connection of her upper body to her buttom/ left leg isn't one tad correct and the top she is wearing does not fit into any painted style.
On top of that, the hair appears like a photo which was overworked with the smudge tool.
I know of no reason why it should be so bad to post references once they're required; in fact your artwork is in the wrong category.
You should move it sothat it can receive the great points that it obviously deserves.

It would be nice to be able to draw and to be able to paint. Too bad I have to learn each of those.
If you painted youself you would know that they are separate things. Like imagination, and a good feel for design etc etc
Like in every cartoon or 3d movie they use the skills of artists/craftsmen for each of those separately.
If you have used painter or Photoshop only very little or not at all then you do not know what you are looking at (with concern to the painting technique .)
You can only tell if you like it or not or give me suggestions about colour or composition , things like that..
If it was a paintover my proportions and everything else would be perfect. The hair? :Look at my other work…
Etc etc etc…… you should only judge what you know ….
Btw I’m not here for the points, just for fun(?) and to learn..

No, seriously, I believe you when you say the 'realism freak' took control of you. I know the feeling. However, staring yourself blind on details goes at the expense of the actual image. The challenge to integrate the skills used in this painting and turning them into one consistent strong style could result in mindblowing images in the near future.
I'm looking forward to that, really.
