Description

First of all, I'm sorry for having been away for so long, as always, I've been very very busy... (I must have already said it 100000 times....)

I hope you're all doing great ^^

This painting is a concept for a videogame project about Atlantis. The characters are Atlas, the king of Atlantis and a Nereid : Dione.
It had to be a little bit similar to "Deep Sea Creature" because this one has become part of the game aswell (so I've added the same features on the faces under the eyes, a similar composition, etc...)

This is some kind of a "speed painting" (10 hours...) and yeah, I know about the blurry hand... boo boo, it's ugly ^^ I'll fix it when I have more time ) so it's a little bit messy... I had to meet a deadline so I've not had time to make it look better and I'm a little bit too busy at the moment to work more on it.

Photoshop CS and my beloved wacom, my bf used as a ref for Atlas face and a mirror for the Nereid's face (each member of the team will be converted into one of the game characters and since my name is very similar to the one of this Nereid, I've painted myself as her :) For the first time, this selfportrait was really required :p )
More coming soon! :)

By the way, we're still searching for 3D artists/animators that could do models and animate them so if you're interested, please send me a message :)

Thanks for viewing! :)

By the way, if you have time, please checkout yule by  jeanne , it's the second part of the celebrations serie we're doing with my best friend :)

First! Great work. Love the feeling of claustraphobia in this like it is really deep down and the bubbles are great.

WOW! It's cool to see new works of you here...
10 hours.... :o You're so good and so fast too.

Avatar JordanRoots

 07/16/07 @726

I see the Jpg compression somewhat killed the details. Also, did you use the Sharpen filter before posting? because I feel the beard is just a little too sharp... but that not such a big problem. This work is very good, and even if you hadn't mentioned it in the description, it's very apparent that this is a sequel to your previous work: Deep sea creature.
the ambiance is very cold, contrarily to Deep sea creature, and you achieved that feeling very well.
I think the upper lip should be lighter given the overall lighting.
I really like the girl in the background (you). It really looks like you and I like it, you have a very pretty face.

im going to have to demand you to post the photo ref ;)
why? come on I cant be the only one who wants to see your new BF :p

Avatar Diane

 07/16/07 @729

Thank you very much gurcan, alebrije, Pam and Jordan :)
The upper lip is very dark indeed, but the shadows under the nose / eyebrows are very dark indeed, I've painted what I've seen looking at him ;)
I've sharpened it a little bit indeed because the jpg compression totally killed it, but I'm not pleased with the result, the original looks much better (this one looks flat, oversharpened in some areas and very blurry in some other areas, I really don't like this jpg compression!)
Thank you very much for your comment :)

Pam : I don't have a ref for this one, but I can still post the reference I'm using for the current painting I'm working on ;)

Diane how are you saving your files.. this is not the first time I have heard you say this about your post. you know you go to file then save to web then save it to max
and quality %100 it should save nice... and from what I can see looks very nice nothing looks off that I can see..
ps have you gotten your hands on CS3 yet??
I hear nice things about it..
PSS you know im teasing you about the ref... ok no im not I wanna see lol
im nosy :p

Avatar Diane

 07/16/07 @735

I'm not saving them to 100% because it's too heavy when I use this method, I'm saving them to quality 70%.... It makes the image look lighter and a little bit flat... but it's not a huge problem, I just feel a little bit frustrated when something I've very detailed becomes totally blurry ^^
I've not tried CS3 yet, did you do it? I'm really curious about the new tools, it sounds great!
I've sent you a PM btw ;)

thank you very very much that made my day I tell yah :p
and you should save them to 100% you have a new external hard drive right?? so then it shouldn't be a problem :p
and no CS3 for me yet maybe someday *sigh*

Avatar Diane

 07/16/07 @739

Thank you very much Foxie

Pam : you're welcome ;) And you're right, I'm gonna save them to 100% now, I was used to save them to 70% but I have much more space now I hope you can have CS3 soon, it really seems to be a hell of a software!

I guess the term speed painting is relative :)

Great work, especially in 10 hours, I would have guessed more in the 20 hours ;)

This image is very well executed, but the composition doesn’t have quite as much "punch" as some of your other work, such as your "lord of nightmares".

CS3 extended, is indeed quite nice, CS3 "standard" isn’t worth it... it feels more like CS 2.2 with some interface changes.

Good to see you Diane

Great work! Not your best though, but remarkable as this is a speedpaint(!)

Lovely colours,
great lighting

Composition is definately the 'weakest' element,
it feels thrown in a bit.

Overall an impressive work of art, love those bubbels

Thank you guys ^^

Vincent : yes, I think that adding some extra space on the left and working more on the hand would have done the trick (and also working more on the nereid, she's very sketchy....) but I had to meet a deadline, so here's the result, an unbalanced speedpaint ^^ Thanks a lot for your crit! :)

Very mysterious and haunting imagery, I wouldn't add a whole lot of of detail to the hand in the foreground. You might wind up with competing focal points with the main subjects face But that's just me. Very beautiful. 8/8

I think you did a great job on the faces; I have a problem with the guy's hair though, it does not appear to have enough consistency and it does not blend with the head very well.. dunno how to explain it :p

Avatar BaronImpossible

An excellent work all round. Atlas' face really makes this piece and his eyes are hypnotising. His red lips are a nice touch too, although I have to say the colour looks a bit like an afterthought.

A couple of problems, though: His hand was difficult to make out at first. To me it seems a little awkward and perhaps too blurred. I'd also expect his fingers to be stronger, less lady-like, or even webbed would be cool.

As I said, his eyes are amazing, but the woman's eyes don't work so well. It looks like she has closed her eyes and we're looking at her eyelids. A bit of shadow on the top lid and a speck of highlight where the lower lid meets the eye would sort it out.

The rest is superb!

Wow, I'm overwhelmed by such a warm response, thank you so much people!

Raluca : thanks The creator of the game wanted me to erase even more hair though, he said that there was too much hair on his head ^^

BaronImpossible : thank you very much for your extended comment, much appreciated! :) I totally agree with you about the hands and the eyes of the lady, these are the most sketchy parts and I'm not satisfied at all with them... I think that I'll take time to fix it soon, it may look much better! :)
The red lips weren't an afterthought (actually, it was one of the first things I've done), but I see what you mean since I've not worked a lot on them, they look a little bit sketchy and artificial. Thank you very much! :)

Avatar chickenfingers

 07/18/07 @033

Not that you need more comments (:p) but of course I think this is super. Mr. Atlas has a killer face. Luminescent polyp thingies (well, hell if I know what--or if--they have a technical name, heh) flanking the eyes are muy cool, too. Somehow, his shoulder doesn't look rounded to me (perhaps a touch of shading would convince me?), but I really didn't notice that until after I'd licked looked at all the shiny, detaily stuff. Mmmm.

Salut Diane.
About this blurry effect on his hand, I don't find it too disturbing 'cos it adds depth to the view, like blurred bubbles do. But these hands are too thin like BaronImpossible said. Anyway +10... oops I forgot I am not at this stage where I can vote more than +9. So...
Oh and thanks a lot for having listed me in your favourite artists list. I feel very honoured :)

I gotta say, this is my favorite work from you so far; The color scheme is well done, and the lightning effects are very rich; It has a nice, rendered quality to it. The details are precise, and not overworked. I might be in the minority, but I dig the hand; It adds a sense of depth to the image, contributed to the watery environment, and attracts attention to the face. So I dig it.

+10 well earned.
