Description

This one is old too. I posted it at cgtalk.com a long time ago and realized I never did here a week or so ago. I could have sworn I did!

I decided to post it though because I do want to do more painting than I have and thought it would be best to get as many crits on my painting and drawing as possible. So here is another, and this is very different in style than my others.

People have interpreted this differently, which I have enjoyed. It's been printed onto canvas and shown in at least 3 galleries/expos in my local area with a great response. I'm a little embarrassed about the anatomy myself, but really enjoy the scene itself. Anyway, crits are very welcomed and hope you like it!!! :)

  • Photoshop CS
  • Used photos of myself, photo of a floor and a chess board for reference
  • Painfully long hours
  • Printed onto canvas 22"x22"
  • I touched up the brightness a good bit for dark monitors BTW

Very cool, i think u have oppressed the light a little too much. if i'm correct a spotlight of such brightness would have more ambiance which would make the surrounding area brighter ;) as well az have a greater effect on her skin tone......right . Anyway still very well done

Beautiful painting!

Looks like lots of work and long hours! :p

Where is the opponent? Should there not be 2 players.
The way the girl sits I feel it would be difficult for the opponent to even get close to the board.

Very sensual the way she sits! ;)

(I am a chess player)

No opponent! Studying chess by herself :) I believe some hardcore chess players do so, hence why she is smoking a cigar, she believes she will be there for some time studying. I wanted to get across that she was indeed by herself by her sitting so closed in and the title "Solitude", as in, alone... perhaps I did not get that across as well as I should have? Thanks for mentioning it, you're the first person to do so! :)

Of course it is obvious (when you say it). I am not paying enough attention.

I know the praticing of games and studies is often done on your own. So from that aspect it is all well.

Well done! :)

I photographed once a chess board in my gallery here on gfx.

I love the composition of this piece, the way the floorboards just end is cool. I love the board, the glass really works. I think her/your left thigh is a bit thin and flat. Very well done :)

Guess she folded the left sleeve, though I cant see it. :)

So much attention to so many small details. Simply excellent!

I don't see any problem with the light.

The legs don't look right... Other than that, Fantastic work and subject!
Studying the board, it's very hard playing yourself. you can't hide any plans you make... :) reminds me of Bobby Fischer. Oh and I like how she fades into the black behind her too. Great subject!

i really like how you did the board here, but i wish i'd see the same level of detail on her legs. right now they look a bit too soft and undefined to me, unfortunately. a few minor anatomy issues here and there, but overall this piece is really great. you've captured the right atmosphere and again, the details of the chess board are stunning

her leg seems to have the anatomy wrong, she's also flat, besides this seem way smuged.
