Description

The Red Crossbill is one of my favourite birds. The bird in this photo is not some kind of freak or mutant. All crossbills have this unusual bill - an adaptation for prying seeds out of pine cones.

This photo was taken from the parking lot, before setting out on the hike where I photographed Lower Lake Kananaskis and Upper Lake Kananaskis by  workster.

The bird above is a male. I have linked a photo of a female as an additional download.

really nice birshot:)

The clear blue sky really adds to the impact.

The background is a bit too busy IMO

Otherwise well done indeed

Very nice details of the "Red Crossbill".

You found an excellent angle imo.

Some distractions in the lower section of the background maybe.

Great Don. I've only seen this species once in my life. They rarely wander to RI. A flock of about 50 descended into the pines in my yard and fed for an hour on the seeds within the cones. Sadly, I was not a photographer then. I've heard that the northern seed crop is light this year. This may bring the more northern birds further south this winter. Already seen in southern New England are Pine Siskin, Common Redpoll, and Pine Grosbeak.

Keep up the good work Don!

I agree with Patrick. Itīs a very cool photo, Great bird and very peculiar detail. However the lower part of the image is a bit distracting, the yellow leaf seams to be perfectly focused and because of that, and the bright color, it fights for our attention with the bird when we look at it.

Great capture, I watched a documentary called Nature of Britain a couple of days ago and this brid was featured.

I agree about the busy background at the bottom, it is a little distracting.

Good work.

Thanks for the comments.
Regarding the business at the bottom - the top was worse. I cloned out leaves and branches that were poking out of the bird.
Michelle - Pine Siskin, Common Redpoll and Pine Grosbeak are common around here. The siskin and redpoll tend to be irruptive with a few around most years, but much larger numbers every once and a while.
