Bottom is better for me, too.
A great portrait.

Top: Beautiful lighting for the hair/beard - brings out great textures in the skin. Dramatic without being too obvious - nice range of midtones and the vignetting on the shoulders works well drawing the eye into the face.
The catchlights in the eyes, while quite fascinating, give the impression he's been possessed by a demon or something! For anything approaching a 'conventional' portrait I'd suggest that's something to be avoided, unless of course you could persuade him to wear a superhero costume... radio-active man or something!
Dof is a bit too narrow, the nose is very soft and with everything else pin sharp it takes a little away from the perfection.

Bottom: here the Dof is perfect - everything pin sharp except for his right arm which leads you into the picture - that works really well.
Catchlights in the eyes are nice here too - they add a sparkle.
Maybe just a little uniform in the tones on the shadow side - perhaps a very soft reflector to add a little more variety there (?).

This is fine work LennO - really very impressive work in a very demanding discipline.

I knew from the thumbnail this is your work:)

You have a very distinctive style in a good way of course;)

The second one is my favourite as the hands and arms give more expression.
as mentioned the midtones are terrific.

Nice work!

Great post!

Your father must be very proud and happy about the end result! ;)

I particularly enjoy the eyes of the first one. Great clarity and reflection from lights into the eyes. Just how I like it! :)

The bottom pose is also very nice and powerful!

Only thing I don't like is the light onto the balder part of his head on the first one. That light is a bit strong and should be more evenly distributed or even have the top cropped off.

Still top marks!

I like both and very interest in kind of lights and position for pictures.
I agree in total with Traff comments, mostly regarding the lights reflections in the first picture! In any case my top mark! +8/8

I like both although he has a "stronger" look in the first. The catchlights in the first are interesting and add a bit of uniqueness to his eyes. Each is a wonderful portrait and both have different moods.
Well done!

Very nice portraits of your Dad Len. He's a handsome man indeed. Black and white works well. Interesting lighting from the left side. I like the lower photo best because of his pose. I do not care for the reflection in his eyes in the top photo. You probably should use some method of light diffusion to avoid this happening in the future.

Very nice work!

@MsMichelleLynn:
actually the light reflection in his eyes were intended. I wanted to lead the views eye on his eyes by using this sort of reflections...

@All:

Thank you very much for your comments!!!

Brilliant. Simply love the first one, the expression on his face, his eyes and his beard.

The second one is technically good, but it doesn't give the same feeling as the first one.

Beautiful shots Lenny. Reflections in the eyes on the first one are great. And the second one... is like a painting. Excellent.
Can't say which one I like the most. :)
Top marks. :)

Your father is most photogenic. He should be an actor - he could easily be the emperor of some remote galaxy.

These works are very high quality, the rest is a matter of taste.

In the first, the light on his head is distracting. The light on the forehead is on the border. Just a bit too strong.

In the second, the right side of face is a bit overexposed (I realize you have been very careful with the lighting)

I dont like the procession of the eyes, especially in the first one, that looks un-human, and therefore doesn't fit the very authentic character. I realise it was your choice.

Altogether this work is very impressive.
