Description

Holy crap- it's been a long time since I posted here. I'm working hard on my book to complete it for a November 2008 release. Yes, it will finally be coming out:)To make sure I give it my full attention I've taken a break from my regular Art Direction duties, allowing me to solely focus on the story and images. It's so much fun and so rewarding. Anyways- here's a painting I did awhile back for Magic the Gathering.

I hope you like and please check out the large version:)

Phil

You are writing a fantasy novel? Or is this some other kind of book?

Beautiful detailed work. Hard to believe (but not) that it is all painted. Based on the the angle of light I do feel the left side mid ground tree stump should have more contrast than the stump on the right.

Awesome work Philip.

I have a slight issue with the composition, meaning it feels like the center tree is blocking the view rather than adding a significant element to the whole.

I guess it's something personal;)

Great realistic colours, excellent tlighting and depth

This must have been painstaking work:)

Penraeth- its an 11 x 17 hardcover book with over 60 illustrations and an original story. So it's fantasy yes, a regular novel no...kind of a graphic novel on steroids.....nothing like it has ever really been done before.

twistoflime- you are right on the light issue - I took artistic licence to keep the front tree (the hero of the piece) in the highest point of contrast.

Wallace: Yeh- I always had a slight issue with the composition as well- the magic cards, with thier square aspect ratio are hard to deal with sometimes.

I understand about the front tree, which is perfectly fine. I'm comparing the light on the left tree to it's counterpart on the right, not the front tree.

Is this matte painting? It looks great! I am always amazed how good some artist can paint trees and nature. That's something I need to work more on. I don't have problem with the tree being in the middle. It adds more roughness to the whole scene.
Getting your own book published, that's every artists dream come true! Good luck with it. :) :) :)

The textures are (almost) perfect, Phillip. I haven't checked gfxartist much lately but I'm glad I did just now and caught this gem.
