Description
My first Golden Eagle sighting!I didn't get the whole eagle into this picture and the light on its face could be better. The focus isn't that great and the post processing required to bring out this amount of detail is a little too much. I have another very nice photo of this eagle sitting on a branch before it took off and flew towards me. Technically my other photo is much better.
I don't care! My other photo doesn't capture the power and grace of the eagle the way this one does. For me, this rocks! Obviously I'm biased - hopefully you enjoy it as well.

At the same time we are here to judge photography and you already mentioned all the flaws. No need to repeat.
If I could give you one score for difficulty and effort I guess you would be close to +10. For the technical part (and there are a few issues) it ain't worth more than +7 at best.
Still +8

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with an 8 for this. I'm just interested in hearing what others think of this one.

I think the crop could be better: foot is chopped, but there is a lot of sky above.
And the main subject is way too dark.
Obviously these are just my opinions.
BTW, I love what you said about measuring technical against impact. So true!

I have many "almost the picture of my life" bird shots like this one. To me they are all bloopers. What I like about digital photography is that you dont cry over bloopers anymore. They are much less painful than in the film era.

Trevor - I agree with all of your critiques. I don't mind the wing being chopped off so much but the other talon would add a lot to this.
Roadrunner - good suggestions and comments. I don't believe in excuses (such as: too far away, or difficult shot, or elusive animal) so I'm not expecting any slack in this regard. If an excuses are required one always has the option not to publish.

excellent capture, lacking technical aspects, but it was a good idea to share it anyway

Michelle - the main migratory route for Golden Eagles is west of Calgary on the eastern edge of the Rockies. Observers count hundreds of birds per day during migration. Typically the birds that are counted during migration are viewed as small specks way up in the sky, so I was fortunate to get such a close look at this one. This major migratory route wasn't even discovered until 1992.
