Description

My first Golden Eagle sighting!

I didn't get the whole eagle into this picture and the light on its face could be better. The focus isn't that great and the post processing required to bring out this amount of detail is a little too much. I have another very nice photo of this eagle sitting on a branch before it took off and flew towards me. Technically my other photo is much better.

I don't care! My other photo doesn't capture the power and grace of the eagle the way this one does. For me, this rocks! Obviously I'm biased - hopefully you enjoy it as well.

Simply awesome! Great catch and lighting. I like the framing, though my eye goes towards the bird's eyes, I follow his wing and end up going back with the feathers flicked.

Capture is great for you! Understand the difficulty and excitement catching this beautiful creature.

At the same time we are here to judge photography and you already mentioned all the flaws. No need to repeat.

If I could give you one score for difficulty and effort I guess you would be close to +10. For the technical part (and there are a few issues) it ain't worth more than +7 at best.

Still +8 ;) for the combination then... :)

Thanks for the comments. If my other photo (I'll post it next) is technically better but this is the one that makes more people say "wow", then which is the better photo? I think we sometimes value technical quality too much and impact too little.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with an 8 for this. I'm just interested in hearing what others think of this one.

F@#&! Sometimes Tech issues are not all there is! Yes this could be better techwise, but would it really make a huge difference in terms of impact?? IMHO I don't think it would! I really loved this one! +9 (just a -1 for the tech issues that could be better! )

This image definitely has some "wow" factor, and I know how challenging it can be to get a shot like this -- heck, I was just shooting pictures of eagles a couple of days ago -- but, respectfully...
I think the crop could be better: foot is chopped, but there is a lot of sky above.
And the main subject is way too dark.
Obviously these are just my opinions.
BTW, I love what you said about measuring technical against impact. So true!

I like the composition. Not everything has to be perfect ! ;)

Nice capture. You can still save such shots by cropping tighter and exposing all the dark parts, especially the face. You do have a nice pose, eye contact, and two scary talons there.

I have many "almost the picture of my life" bird shots like this one. To me they are all bloopers. What I like about digital photography is that you dont cry over bloopers anymore. They are much less painful than in the film era.

Thanks for the comments.
Trevor - I agree with all of your critiques. I don't mind the wing being chopped off so much but the other talon would add a lot to this.

Roadrunner - good suggestions and comments. I don't believe in excuses (such as: too far away, or difficult shot, or elusive animal) so I'm not expecting any slack in this regard. If an excuses are required one always has the option not to publish.

umm... For how I score things, out of 7 they get 7 if tech skills are amazing. if the tech skills are only graded as "good" and the actual object of it is awesome, It doesn't matter past that. It's all about what the picture is. Detail and all that are just an added bonuses. Then again, I'm not going to satisfy myself until My works are almost pixel-perfect. If you need to see how far off it I am, look at my works. but only if you have no history of heart weaknesses. My lack of skill might be that bad. I'll get over my self-pity now to avoid being yelled at to get over it :p

Given the amount of time you probably had to compose and shoot, I'd say this is a hell of nice capture. Nice work. +9

Pretty cool capture. Too bad about the cut off parts near the bottom.

Could be sharper as well.

Oh man you were so close to getting that bottom talon in, but hey, you get the face in focus... it's still a good action shot.

I don't at all like the crop but I love that you shared this wonderful sighting. I've never seen a Golden Eagle Don. They are rarely seen in Rhode Island ... perhaps a single bird flies through once every 2-3 years.

Thanks for the comments.
Michelle - the main migratory route for Golden Eagles is west of Calgary on the eastern edge of the Rockies. Observers count hundreds of birds per day during migration. Typically the birds that are counted during migration are viewed as small specks way up in the sky, so I was fortunate to get such a close look at this one. This major migratory route wasn't even discovered until 1992.
