Very nice. I like the style.
Seems like a japanese kind of picture.
I like the deep colors around the body and face of the woman. Nice.

I give it a 5/5.

This is simply stunning, tremendous work.

I'm sure I could nit-pic a few minor things, but minor enough not to distract from the whole.

Amazing vector work.

OK, but did you read the rules? You are required to post the link to the actual photo you have used, not a vague reference to where you got it from.

Otherwise it's not possible to tell how much of this is your creative work, and how much is due to the original photographer.

Just as I thought - a perfectly traced photo, down to the detail and overall red-black color scheme.

Can you, please, oh please, draw something on your own? Without tracing? It is so much more rewarding, I am sure you'll like it if you try.

arenhaus: I've been a commercial artist for 20+ years. In almost all areas of the industry. Do you really think I have never drawn anything from just looking at it or out of my head? I'm willing to bet we all have. Haven't you ever heard th old cliche' "work smarter not harder" You know any of us here "could" redraw a photo acurately without "tracing" ... but how long would that take? Most of the time I do my own photography and work from there. When you use Painter ... do you start with a blank window or do you scan in a sketch to work from? Sketch or photo, whats the difference? Either way ... does this image take any less skill? It's not like some filter in photoshop created this image with a push of a button. I still had to draw it. Did you know every pin-up artist in the industry does it the same way I created this illustration? I know this for fact. Weather they hire a photographer or do it themselves. The illustration was still created by the artist. In case you didn't understand that, the bottom line is ... I still had to draw it, it still took my skills and talent to create the illustration, it's still a reflection of my own personal style ... and I wasn't infringing on the photographers copyright.

And your comment about "Can you, please, oh please, draw something on your own? Without tracing?" Get the hell off your high horse ... most of the work I have posted here I drew without "tracing" So I have tried it, and I do like! Every illustration I have posted here was rewarding to me. Whats also rewarding to me is that I make a damn good living "tracing". LOL!! Maybe you should try "tracing' ... it's pretty rewarding ... you might even like it.

i like it, i'm taken by the whole vector as a style movement though...and Nagel is such a hard umbrella to get out from under, he redefined sexy in the 80s, really we all should give nagel a nod....

this is cool, but why ...A. the eyes are right dead on, almost too perfect, very cool, lots of the sexy is coming straight from there, (and she's showing a lot of cleavage sooo thats saying a lot)...B. There is a heart at every exit point of my eyepath...drawing me back in, and shaking me down the image...the whole movement of the image comes straight out of the hearts...you really magnified the curvaciousness of the model through them...but the photo you started with is the opposite, in the photo the hearts are actually pulling out of center...and distracting away from the model....you reversed it by keeping your colors solid and not going with too much reflection...also choosing to ignore the cast shadows covering chest and shoulder was a good idea...

and don't think i didn't notice how you reshaped the face and chest, for the better...we don't need to tell the models about that sort of thing do we?

put what do i know, i'm just another tracer...

AkunaStyle: "Sketch or photo, whats the difference?"

An abyss of difference. I don't know whether you are actually unaware of it, or feigning it for sake of argument, but I'll play along. You see, all the most important decisions that define what the picture will become are done on the planning stage, not in the execution. Composition and framing, color scheme, subject matter and light, these all are infinitely more important than the finish you give the picture. So if you start with a sketch, it's all yours - all the 90% of the creative decisions are up to you. And if you start with a photo someone else took, you just let them make these 90% and take up the comfortable mechanical task of finishing. At which point I am really inclined to give most of the artistic credit to the photographer, not the tracer.

This arenhaus/AkunaStyle discussion is VERY interesting and valid and I'd like to see it carried on and get others opinions on the subject too.

However, I think this is the wrong place to have it, so with Akunastyle and arenhaus' permission I have started a thread in the Discussion Forum, please feel free to contribute:
The merits of tracing a discussion started by Arenhaus and AkunaStyle

PS. AkunaStyle, you know I love this image don't you? LOL, forgot to mention.

Avatar reilanchan

If Akuna would move this to the design section the whole discussion would be over, right?

Avatar kittyKat

 01/31/05 @681

reilanchan he still drew this and he has written and verbal permissions from the original photographer and the author added it to his fan art web site.
its his style please look at his other post and take a look at those
it takes alot of work to make one of these
its not a design and its not a photo minip he didn't chop this
its 'drawn' in illustrator 10
sorry thats just my 2 cents :|

Avatar Wysiwyg

 01/31/05 @684

No vector does not equal design....but that's not the discussion here.

I like this alot, although I was a little dissapointed when I checked the reference photo and saw that those little hearts and details were present there too. I thought you just had a basic pose, and then elaborated on it.

Still, I'm experienced with Illustrator and know how fustrating vectors can be...good job.

Avatar AkunaStyle

 01/31/05 @693

You're all missing the point of this illustration.
It was meant to look like the photo. It was also meant to show what I can do in illustrator with a photo.

I have this printed out 24"x36" hanging on the wall of a business ... he does large format printing and photography. It's a promo to show my ability to reproduce an image in my own style of art. And credit was given to the photographer.

Despite the fact that photos are generally used for tracing in a lot of vector stuff. You technical skill for rendering the figure in vector is outstanding. More importantly the design element of a this piece is exceptional
