Description

Hi everyone, Sorry for the long absence! Been very busy lately.(yadda yadda yadda)

I have been asked to provide a tutorial for this 'Drew Struzan' technique since October 2004. So to those that have been waiting this long, my apologies! But your wait is finally over.

This is my latest piece on the Drew Struzan style. I picked Jennifer Garner as Elektra because she looks so cool. However I do not like the movie at all.

Okay, so all you want right now is the tutorial? Alright, don't let me stall you. Go on and click on the tutorial link and pray the Geocities server is not busy.

http://www.geocities.com/jerotest/ElektraTutorial.htm

I hope it is helpful!

[EDIT] Following the advice of arenhaus, I wish to note here that you can find the original reference for this work in the tutorial section. Thank you.

[UPDATE 7/2/05] The artwork has been touched up again. It seemed that after not looking at my work for some time, I begin to spot many more rooms for improvement.

Love the tutorial, the trace method is simular to the one employed by Boris Vallejo and it dosen't detract at all from the excellent colouring (thumbup)

beautiful technique, I love messy styles like this, it's what non-digital painting is really good for ;)

I think you have exceeded your data transfer on your hosting - cant wait until you get it sorted as I saw it briefly before it disappeared and it was absolutely stunning!!!

same message as ultraviolet got. Pity, the thumbnail looked good. Could you PM me when it's up again?

Did you use any photographs? If you did, please post the link to the original photograph for us to compare.
Sorry to pester you, but 1) it is in the rules, and 2) some people have posted entirely too many pictures traced directly over photographs here recently, which could negatively impact the credit given to any artists. By complying to the rules, you help us to keep the good faith in artwork.

The image is not displayed and the link doesn't work either :(

I've always liked Struzan's work (back in the days before movie posters became bad photo montages), and you've got a good take on his style, though there are some subtle differences.

There was a movie behind her? I just went to see Jennifer in that red Valentine's Day outfit... hubba hubba!!!

BTW: Great tutorial.

Hi All, thank you very much for your comments. Yes, I've deviated a bit from the actual Drew Struzan style because I wanted to experiment new styles. Sorry if some of you are offended by that and expected to see pure Struzan instead.

arenhaus, I have included the original photograph in my tutorial. I hope you didn't miss it. I agree with what you said and that people should show us the original references for us to truly appreciate the final product.

I am glad that some of you enjoyed the tutorial. I thought it might not be what you are looking for, which is PURE Struzan. :)

DigitalDust, haha.. I just want to see another episode of Alias until the title Elektra comes up.

Ah, now I see it, the tutorial didn't come up at first for me because of exceeded bandwidth limit at your host. You might want to emphasize it in the description that the tutorial contains the photo, it was not too clear.

Otherwise - solid illustration work. I'd really like to see what you could do without a photo. :)

Jerome, im so glad that it's back! It's breaktaking I absolutely love the mixture of stroke styles and media. The contrast between the silkiness of her basque, the shine of her necklace and the texture and tones of the background is superb. Thanks for including the tutorial - it is really helpful. I voted already so nothing left to do other than add you to favourite artist! :)

very nice, good tutorial - despite the fact you used photography. Your style makes really big difference to the photograph making your work somewhat more unique than the common traced works. Very nice - be sure to work without photos too.

+10 from me.

I really like this piece.
It's a great example how talented people with skill can work with traditional media.

To me it's a perfect portrait and I also like the colors you used and the look you gave to it very much.

+9 :)

Ultraviolet: I am honoured to make it to your list . Thank you very much!

Crow: I will try. :)

Yeah this looks like a throwback to 80's poster art. Love it. I think more posters should be done this way as I am bored of the photo manipulated posters of today. I like the paint spatter on the background. Lovely detail in face. Good work.

Stunning job on the background and the overall colors. Very daring.
Besides the fact I love your work, there's two things that bother me in this:
The hand in the front is, in this perspective, too small.
Her jaw is very masculent. It makes her face look masculant in general. Not very attractive (to me).

AWESOME.

Andy__Jones: I like illustrated posters too! Too bad there's only one Drew Struzan and he can't do them all.

ARTOONATOR: Yeah, Jennifer Garner is a very masculine type of person. Nothing I can do about that LOL. Well, the perspective must be correct because I did it from the photo reference after all. The Photo can be found in the tutorial section.

eduardobedoya04: Thanks!
