Description
This is a first portrait from the serie of 8 for the lovely Amanda (amaranth) for a game of hers. Not revealing all the info, Alora was supposed to be around 16 (I hope I didn't make her look too old ;_; ) with pale skin and light blue hair
I had loads of fun painting it, maybe because I do not do portaits like these often.
Critiques are MORE THAN WELCOME, because I really want amaranth to be satisfied with this hehe!
On a technical note: it took about 8 hours, fully in Painter. No refs ;]
Hope you like it
EDIT: oh btw, explaining the level of detail: The work will be in game visible as a 100pixel tall icon, so that is why I didnt put as much details as I usually do... I will try to figure something out though!
*UPDATE*: I fixed some small detail and shading issues. I will fix them all further once I'm done with the second portrait. Thanks everyone!

Well I think the face is adorable, she does have the look of a sixteen year old. I think the freckles are a great touch. I would change the hue of the background as blue hair on a blue background really seem to get muddled together.
I think I say this as much as arenhaus talks about grays....PUSH YOUR DARKS!!!! Everyone is afraid to push the shadows, but it will result in more dramatic lighting and really give way to form. The handle of the weapon strapped to her back is a good example of what would benefit from an increase in your darks.
To me this piece is +10 waiting to happen, but I think your only about 85% done. I don't know if you want a really loose 'painterly' appearance or what, if so then your're good to go, if not, then it needs some refinement. My main reason for saying that is the top of the head, the hair seems a little flat.
Don't get me wrong, I this is just plain awesome, but if you just add some refinement to certain areas (lips, hair, edges of costume, weapon handle) it could be even greater.
I could vote now, or wait for a revision let me know. I would give this +8 but it's soooooo close to a 10. PM me if you want me to vote now or later..
Such a cute face
Oh, and I really like the detailing on the jewelery (gleaming effect).

It's a lovely picture if a little straightforward pose. The hair's good, I know White hair can be very tricky. I'm with Brett on the feeling you should've pushed the detail more. The level of detail you usually produce belies this image as unfinished for you.
02/07/05 @034
but, you know... is a great job!
02/07/05 @042
Oh and Raphael: You see, this picture will be like.. 100pixels TALL in game, thats why the details were reduced XD
02/07/05 @043
The jewels are great, i love it.
She has a cute face like
Also her lips are really beautiful and those eyes....
Great job

It's cool to see something different from you from time to time.
02/07/05 @089
reilanchan: hehe, I know it is different, but I think this specific assignment needed a change in style
02/07/05 @093
I have the opinion that variations in style can bring different sites and more personality to life than just sticking with one.

I agree that shadows and detail could be pushed further. For an icon, this is perfect. For a GFX Gallery submission...........the details and shadows could be pushed further. Hehe
I think that more could be put into her hair- at the moment there's not much detail- more just a suggestion of the details, if you k now what I mean. Some more refining and that hair would be gorgeous!
I love the design of her outfit (as much of it as we can see, anyway)
Besides those things, I love the expression on her lips and the way her eyes were coloured. Her earrings are also quite well done. As I said before, I love the fur and the painterly look of the picture as a whole. And no references? Well done!
I won't vote yet because it sounds like you're going to do a revised version? Let me know either way and I'll drop in my score! ^_^ Keep up the lovely work BlacKeri

Yes, it could use some more variety texture-wise, and more pronounced modeling. That is, apart from the coarse fleece, which is nicely painterly textured, most other spots are waxy here. For instance, the finish of the face, hair, leather, hlit, and metal clasp, if you look past the color and brightness difference, is essentially the same flat wax that catches almost no highlights.
Add transparent shadows and opaque highlights to the face, deeper shadows and sliding directional highlights to the hair (and make the strand texture less pronounced in shadows, more so in lights), deepen the color of the leather vest and make some subdued highlights dance off it. Make the metal contrasting and deep in color, with sharp reflections and bright highlights. Touch the band plaited around the hilt with subtle highlights to bring out its thickness and roundness of the hilt. Rework the face to "tighten" its modeling, so that the wings of nose don't look so mismatched and the philtrum does not run aside. Make lighting more consistent, in short.
Good start, keep working.

This looks so much different then your other styles. I know you mentioned it will be small however it does show nowhere close the detailing your other paintings show.
This is much more painterly looking. And to be honest I think it has a lot of charm.
Her face reminds me a bit of Jessica Alba
The fur on the right side is really well done and the leather on the sword hilt as well - great shading there.
Her vest seems extremely flat though she definately could need some highlights and shadows even though it will be downsized. I took it into ps and sized it down. Since there are no real shadows it blends together too much.
I also would make the golden ornaments on her vest thicker so you can see them better on the avatar.
You could also add some more darker shading around her nostrils (I can't really explain it in English ) but the little shadows righ and left of the very tip of her nose.
02/07/05 @472
I wil lfix those things!
About the vest: i know, I think I maybe have hurried it too much, well, I will surely fix all of those... =) Thank you again!!!!

the hair is okay
the eyes i think it should be a little more detailed and also her lips
she looks beautiful, calm, a little sad/angry at the same time.
the clothes i think are really good in here. but i dunno about the colors of the clothes because her hair has some weird and beautiful color and her eyes are kinda pink and then her clothes are brown hm i would change it for another color to make it fit better... (this is my opinion)
she remembers me a little the sims2 because of the lips.
i hope it can helps a little, because i'm not so much into digital painting i'm still kinda "newbie".

One for the small avatar, where detail is not much needed, as when it is small, too much contrast shadowns, and small stuff, can be very confusing for the eye.
And the other one, you could turn into a full blown BIG version with all the improvements the others
The girl is very cute, and I love those freckles
8+ (Ops, acidentally clicked on 9+, well, when you put all the finishing touches, the nine will be completely yours

I don't agree about the blue on blue comment from Brett, sorry dude, (it's actually an intense purple-blue on greyed-purple with my monitor, so which is it?) because the values are so different and well defined it works and gives good color harmony.
Other than a few comments already noted, I'd like to see more shadow under the nose - right now it's reading kind of "pug" because it is not casting enough shadow of a nose protruding from the face. (but maybe that's what you're going for?)
While there are a few things that could be refined and detailed, I'd say go easy on it and try to keep the looseness and freshness to the piece, it's what makes it work for me.

One thingy: I think her eyes are a bit too old. Or maybe they are hardened by war/fighting or something?
Great portrait nonetheless.

Woah... I just noticed this but there's a speck of plum purple in the upper left hand corner of the background... I'm not sure if it's supposed to be there, but yeah.
