Description

Her name is Goblin. Disturbed and abused, she has a magic ring that conjures up a serpentine overseer to reek havoc on any who mean to harm her...

Yes, I got a little "smudge tool" happy with my strokes, but I wanted to show a sense of a battered and torn character study, the shadow of the looming villian figure, the unfeeling gaze in her eyes, and the foreboding of the skull implied in the moon.

This was an illustration done for a short story titled "A Step Into Darkness" in the L Ron Hubbard Presents The Best of the Writers of the Future anthology published by Bridge Publications, Inc.

It is a collection of some of the best writers' stories from the writers competition and illustrated by winners of the illustration competition.

Sad...but excellent concept and mood...the lighting works very well with the mood of the picture...The big eyes on the background are a scary but effective detail...very well done Darren!!

I'm not a huge fan of the smudge effect, but the concept is good.

Interesting -- I'm not confident with the smudge tool myself, but I think her clothing works very well with it. The face is great. I suggest refinement around the eyes of the serpent. :) (thumbup)

eh, there's no need to apologize for the smudge tool. The strong presentation of contrast surely makes up for it....wonder how this would look as a duotone, or maybe a tri color pallete...

Very nice softness to this piece Darren. I like your shading technique. Her left cheek (to our right) I think needs a bit of work though. It looks indented.

Excellent quality from you as always.

Have'ta say I really appreciate everyone's comments on this and not beating me over the head for what I felt were it's weaknesses, but to see the emotive angle I was trying to achieve.

My thanks!

(and I just realized what those "Rate critique as" icons are for - does anybody ever use those?)

Great image. You can really sense the isolation she must feel in that face.

Darren, Good to see your work again after so long. You always were good, now you seem to be approaching greatness. I hope things are well with your family. Drop me a line sometime!
