Photoshop & a little Painter. I have two daughters that LOVE Orlando so I thought I would do this for them, and I figured it was one way to get them interested in my art. :)

Something seems weird with the way his left (our right) ear sticks out so much when the other one seems to pinned back to his head. Other than that, nice work!

Unfortunately, the construction is rather loose here; the eyes, nose and mouth "crawl about the face" ever so slightly. The perils of working from a celebrity photograph, I suppose: it is much harder to find the underlying structure in a flat photo of a face in make-up, than in a head you see in real life.

(That is a hint, by the way. You will impress a few people who don't know better with copied celebrity photos; but it is better to paint from life or imagination than to submit your creative choices to a glamour photographer.)

I know I am going to get some neg feedback for it but I HAD to do this one for my girls. Maybe someday I will get a little more daring. Thanks for your remarks.

"I am still new to the medium and am learning by doing what I know"

I'm afraid youve got it wrong. People learn by doing new things they *don't* know yet, not repeating things they already know. ;) In your case, I suspect that there is very little construction under your copying from photos; I can't tell for sure because you have not shown any sketches, but I think it's evident in little misplacements of the facial features: you don't quite work by detecting and reconstructing anatomical forms, you seem to copy by matching color spots. If that is so, then try to construct and draw a face without a photo. That would be some learning. :)

(BTW, I hope you do realize you're violating the sites' rules by not providing a link to the original photos you've used?)

arenhaus - I'm afraid that YOU"VE got it wrong - I am a colored pencil artist so doing the subject matter that I know while I am learning digital art makes sense to me. Didn't you already give you opinion here? I guess you couldn't resist another dig. Does everything have to be fantasy here? I don't think so.

My job since I was 16 has been to replicate photos so obviously there are many people with an appreciation for this type of art. I don't know what you mean by "I suspect that there is very little construction under your copying from photos" Excuse me but I have taken Life Drawing for 3 years and Fashion Illustration for 2 with live models. I'm not saying I am the best but if you are curious about some technique or want to see a sketch you should really ask , I don't know what you think your stature is here at gfxartist but It doesn't give you the right to insult /accuse me publicly and then call it critiquing or think I am not going to respond accordingly. Oh, BTW I did not copy matching spots but thanks for another accusation and GEE I have never tried any thing new like drawing without a photo (yes that is sarcasm). I get it ... your one of those people that like to cut on anything that doesn't resemble YOUR style - I've read your posts before and know that you really resent those airbrushed pieces as well - Your a real winner aren't you?!

Oh, yea I like the nice little threat about violating the rules too - I bet you a million dollars that you have that rules page on your favorites JUST so you can police this site!! - I will see what I can do about those links, after all I don't want to get REPORTED by you.

Hey Sally - That's a great WIP you're showing us. Totally impressive Thanks for sharing!

I couldn't be so realistic... good work. My only suggestion is that your shadows aren't so deep, the lack of contrast makes the face seem flat. That might be why some of the facial anatomy seems a bit strange.

In studio photography, shadows are generally destroyed for some reason or another, you lose alot of facial structure to that. Great job though, I have to say.

I really like this one. After seeing the photo of it it looks very accurate (the only thing I wondered about was the ear- but it turns out his ear just looks funny in the picture:)) It's VERY well done- especially the hair (something I've never quite been able to master) The only critique I have is I think there's a bit more contrast on the face.

Avatar Sally

 04/26/05 @975

Yes, I agree about the contrast and I think I am going to take this back to the drawing board and change the ear as well, thanks for the critiques - all!

This face seems a bit off :( . The shadows look a big too blended or smudged and i think it is really lacking depth in tone, try putting some even darker tones in the hair and eyes. Your previous works are nice though.

hi there Sally...

First of all i would like to congratulate you on a very nice piece of work...i dont care if you used reference for it as im a believer that artists need to master copying things first before they venture into there own stuff. my dad is a excellent artist...his skills through modelling are unbelievable...probably one of the best in england i think. He constatly tells me to draw from life and but obviously when you need to paint a celebrity like i did (Orlando Bloom from LOTR) you HAVE to use a image from the net or DVD, i mean seriously, you should have heard some of the comments i got in my Orlando Bloom painting!! Have a look for yourlself and read the whole thing...youll be surprised at some of the things said, what arenhous said is nothing compared to the treatment i got! lol :)

Very good work, would have been a 10 if you made some shadows slightly darker but overall very good!! Well done !

Wow, I'm impressed. I like the step by step link. Love to see some pencil sketches!
If I had to say anything, I would agree on just a tad more contrast but that is a matter of taste. When I squint at the original it has a bit more. Good work and I hope the girl are more interested in art!
