yo, Flabber: every morning i get up and thank god for photoshop, for without it i would be lost. getting the colours and details is just a matter of persistance...there's no actual talent involved, it's just a matter of changing things around until they look right. block big areas of colour in at the start and fiddle around with the colour/hue settings until they work together. after a while, you could try overlaying layers of transluscent colour over the top of your pic...it might help to unify them. i think. i'm making this up as i go along, so bare with me...
TJVerhagen, Phaeri: these are based on characters i've been messing around with for since i left college...occasionally i'll launch an efffort to make them into a comic strip or a picture book, but it always seems to fizzle out. i've got the ideas, it's just i lack the organisational skills to make them into a decent story...sigh. one day i'll crack it.
Artoonator: sneaky magician, eh? gives me an idea for a pic...

i tend to use just a simple round paintbrush in Photoshop, plus the airbrush and gradient tool for block colours and basic shading.
cheers for the comments everyone. next week: something a little different...
