Description
Hi. Fatal Gear is a 3D game for mobile phones. This picture was originally planed to be used in one of the in-game interfaces and the required resolution was only 176x208 pixels. Because of the small size, I got lazy and started drawing in painter without any sketch or color concepts, but simply by using a large oil brush to block out the rough shapes and started rendering. Before I was finished with the tiny picture one of the operators who had bought the game called and requested a poster, and they wanted it the next day. Caught with surprise I had to enlarge the tiny rendering about 20 times and with the next couple of hours, cleaned it up and added what details the time frame allowed.
This is my first post here (took me a while to figure out how to make a post heh heh), and because I don’t really have any artist background, and I would like to paint better in the future, your comments will be very welcome. What disturbs me the most with the picture is the gun, it doesn’t even look straight. Then it’s the perspective, it’s just wrong but hopefully not too noticeable? And I am completely not sure of the composition. Anyway thanks for looking at it and please give me some advice on how to improve it. Thank you.

Nice work here! Looks like you've been painting or drawing for quite a while even without having art schooling (if that's what you called without artist background). I think it's the experience that counts, not the qualification!
As for perspective, I think it's convincing enough. The gun would look more "straight" just by refining the form shadow on it a bit more.
The composition is nice overall, except for the building far back in the middle. I think by sitting right at the middle of the image, and being framed and isolated by the smoke, it became too much of a focus and breaks the flow in the composition. But it's just my personal thought.
Well, just out of curiosity... this looks more like an illustration to me (and a nice one). How would it be used as interface?

Amoeba: Yes I have been drawing for a long time, but not professionaly, didn't even have a sketching class. Tried oils in highschool, but started digital painting two years ago and now I'm hooked. Your suggestion is interesting, and now you've said it, I too find that building particularlly annoying. I will try to do something about it when I get home tonight. The picture is used for the BG of the main interface, if you look at the screen shots from the poster link, the interfaces for this game all used an illustration as a background. Thank you very much for the helpful critique, xiexie ;D.
And thanks to you all! I'll post more soon.
